Legendary singer died Monday night, according to his publicist CBC News · Posted: May 01, 2023 9:21 PM EDT
Canadian folk music icon Gordon Lightfoot, whose evocative and poetic songs are etched into the musical landscape of Canada, has died at the age of 84, according to his longtime publicist Victoria Lord.
Born in Orillia, Ont., Lightfoot was hailed as Canada's folk troubadour for his soulful music and stirring lyrics. In songs such as The Canadian Railroad Trilogy and The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald, he explored the country's history, geography and culture.
It was only yesterday When I heard the teacher say Patiently, one and two make three We were children, you and me Let us pray for the ones they call The children of today
Nothin' left but promises Nothin' much is certain All we see is want and need across the board, Why thank you Lord We're livin' in the glory of Your care Skies of blue have all turned brown To the sound of cryin Lord abide, let us stem the tide Of broken dreams Sometimes You seem to tell us It's too late for prayin'
See the ocean wild and blue Think of all that's in her She will not surrender to the likes of us, But then she must They tell us, wise men tell us, it's too late For each child with eyes that smile There'll be ten more cryin' Lord abide, let us stem the time Of helplessness But then I guess we're livin' Is it too late for prayin'
Nothin' here but grains of sand Nothin' much worth savin' Guess we've all got problems of our own to bear, And still we share Tomorrow could get better than today To the ones who've loved in vain Will ya be beholden
Lord abide, let us stem the tide Of broken dreams Sometimes You seem to tell us It's too late for prayin'
Dang. Always liked his songs. Hate to hear that. There’s a good documentary about him on Amazon Prime if you like his stuff. RIP GL

We took the Canadian Mountaineer train trip last year from Vancouver to Lake Louis and one of the songs that played was the Canadian Railroad Trilogy about the building of the Trans Canadian Railway. Not only was it appropriate for the journey but it also is good to remember that Canada had it's own period of manifest destiny before your country and ours lost their way and decided we need to apologize for it.
If something on the internet makes you angry the odds are you're being manipulated
You Canucks sure can produce outstanding singers and songwriters. My hat is off to you . I have all his songs and can never get tired of hearing them. May he RIP
We're losing our icons, the people who made the music that was the soundtrack of growing up. I'm a musical mutt, lean toward heavier stuff, but Sundown was one of those albums that left an impression and still is quite enjoyable near 50 years from when I heard it the first time.
Anyone who thinks there's two sides to everything hasn't met a Mbius strip.
In the middle 70's I built sails for the "Golden Goose" spent a lot of time on the boat helping Gordon learn them and the boat....he was a very personable and a time I will never forget....
He was always one of my favorites , gonna miss him but I still have all of his albums. I hate it but it is to be expected. Most everybody I listened to when I was young are now in their 80's and you cant live forever although Willie is giving it a damn good try. Guess Willie is well pickled , or smoked !
Grumpy old man with a gun.....Do not touch . Better to be judged by 12 than carried by 6. Don't bother my monument and I'll leave yours alone.
I listened to The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald Sunday night on a “reaction video” — todays’s young people commenting (podcast) on music of the 60’s,70’s etc., music of a generation or two before they were born. Music they’ve never heard.
Many are amazed at the quality of the storytelling and that there is very little contemporary music, and few artists today who match the talent or depth of those past times.
TORONTO - Gordon Lightfoot, the legendary folk musician whose silvery refrains told a tale of Canadian identity that was exported to listeners worldwide, has died at 84.
The singer-songwriter died of natural causes at Sunnybrook Hospital in Toronto on Monday evening, said Victoria Lord, the musician's longtime publicist and a representative for the family. He had suffered numerous health issues in recent decades.

The bean counters finally got leverage over the artists. Music has turned into $$ in, $$ out .. just another revenue stream. The safer the product the less chance of loss so they make it all sound the same.

It’s a haunting song.
For those in the area, a visit to the Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum at Whitefish Point is time well spent. Haunting is a good word for it.
GL asked: “Does anyone know where the love of God goes when the waves turn the minutes to hours?” I’ve been on the water a bit and can kind of relate. My little girl and I discussed it and decided that His love was there the whole time. One of my favorite memories as a dad. RIP Mr Lightfoot. Your legacy will endure.
Gord will be laid to rest with his parents in Orillia. The public can drop by and sign a book of condolence on Sunday, May 7th from 1-8 p.m. at St. Paul’s United Church. The church is at 62 Peter St. N in Orillia.
He was the best of the best songwriters/storytellers, and could perform his art on the stage as well as anyone ever sang their own songs. His work always hit me deep in the heart and soul, and it's not quite the same world knowing he and his kind are leaving it.
Definitely one of a kind who will be missed, but his music will last forever.
RIP Mr. Gordon Lightfoot
