But before that, the wheel had to be invented, which incidentally, was unknown in Sub-Saharan Africa until Europeans introduced it in the 1600s

Indeed, the screw thread is an adaptation of the wheel concept. .

That's basically an inclined plane superimposed on a wheel of sorts. The use of the inclined plane concept likely preceded the wheel, IMO. A case of 1 +1 = 3! smile

Fire wasn't an invention. It existed long before anyone thought to make use of it, much less how to make it on demand. That's like saying air was an invention once something learned to breath it.

One COULD argue that round and slanted also pre-existed their use, I suppose. The line is arguably fine.... And then there is the lever.

My nomination is still the wheel, tho.

I'll say agriculture.

The wheel was a big step and a good case has been made here that it was the basis for all further mechanization, but empires were built without it.

The printing press was a huge leap forward in disseminating information relatively cheaply, so it's another big step but really just a large incremental advance in writing which had been invented long before.

Agriculture allowed the very existence of civilizations.

Remember, without agriculture there wouldn't be beer...

The telephone has got to be up near the top.

International transmissions was and is an amazing feat, IMO.
