It's a shame a guy has to tip-toe around someone a badge to avoid repercussions.
Glad to hear that they're gonna get that fence fixed and cattle removed. I’ve never really been one to back down, but as I get older and finally have some free time, I’d much prefer to spend it fishing or working in the garden rather than sitting in court listening to a bunch of azzholes. Probably means I’m a puzzy. I don’t care. I just don’t want the headache anymore. Not a puzzy, just smart about how you handle the situation, IMO.

True to a point unless this has been ongoing with multiple calls about the situation. After a while nice gets tossed out the window and you do whatever it takes to remedy the situation. OP, how many times have you had contact with the owners about the cows being on your property?

Ya’ll read over the part where one is a sheriff’s deputy. What does that have to do with anything? If you don’t know, I doubt I could explain it to you. As someone who grew up, and still lives in, a rural county over-run with the good ol' boy club, dealing with the same issues, you're right - you can't explain it because it can be dealt with.

Back when we raised cattle, the big problem with fences involved three bulls- - - - -ours, plus the next door neighbor's, and the one across the road. They would get involved in some VERY vocal cussfights, and eventually, one or more of them would walk right through a fence to challenge one or both of the others. The lady across the road started calling hers "Bull-Loney"- - - - -"If he breaks down another fence, he's gonna be baloney!" He did- - - -and ended up at the sale barn the next day! The one next door to us could jump a 3-strand barbed wire fence when he decided he wanted to breed one of our cows!

Actually it’s two neighbors, each of whom claim the cows belong to the other. One is a sheriff deputy. Let me guess - he's the estray deputy?

Plumbdumb gonna throw a tantrum on another thread! Mr Conrad. In your neck of the prairie, do you folks "keep your cows up" or do you "keep your cows in" . Awful lot of regional differences on this forum thing.

I have an idea. Get a few portable pen panels, maybe borrow some from the ag dept. Invest in a little sweet feed. Next time they show up shut the gate on them. Call the sheriff immediately and tell him you have captured some unknown person's cattle and ask for advise. Tell them you cannot carry water to them and cannot afford to feed them.
Admittedly the sweet feed might be an incentive for the cattle to come back but I can just about be assured some fence will be fixed or cattle will be sold.
The owner is not going to enjoy having to come get them with a trailer and the sheriff can hardly tell you to turn them loose.
If no one wants them call the ag dept.to handle them as they would any stray.

I didn’t read everything posted and most likely the issue has been resolved but a simple solution would be to push them to the nearest gate to get them back on the right side of the fence and or to cut the fence and then push them back into their pasture and then mend the fence. Then shore up the fence where they’re getting through until the owners can make a more permanent repair

That's good, as I can't imagine the effort it would take to keep a herd of cows "up". Lifting a yearling seems like enough of a stretch, much left a full grown cow and a whole herd of them.
