You can still find 98`s that came back from WW II. My LGS has two now sitting on the shelve, but close inspection suggests they stay there.

Interesting tho, the generation that were "given" a Mauser by their Fathers is passing. That`s where these two came from.

If you want something in 8x57, buy a Rem Classic.
Oh sweet Jeezus, here's^^^ a "Classic" piece of campfire advice...a f...king Remington instead of a Mauser '98. You DO get extras with the Remington though, the rapidly removable bolt handle...the part time extractor constructed from the finest ebay sprrung steel...if you are really lucky you also get the wonder trigger (wonder when it might go off, but that's ok, there is a lawyer near you to help with trigger problems). Right now there a 3 Classic 700's in 8x57 on Guns Intl...ranging from 850 to 2,200...hurry, they are flying off the shelf.

Well this is a fine pickle we're in, should'a listened to Joe McCarthy and George Orwell I guess.

I quess you didn`t read my post, or didn`t understand it.

I love 98`s and have more than several, tho none now in 8x57, but one in 8mm06AI on a 09 and sporterized, or custom, depending on your point of view, but see the OP didn`t answer my, and others, question as to his definition of "Sporterized", or what $ he might consider spending.

Mine also have the bolts altered for scope use, replacement triggers, new barrels, drilled and tapped, blued, new stocks, etc. If you get a late War gun with stamped parts, you`ll want new bottom metal. A few bucks and some time involved, to have a sporterized Mauser, if you start with a stock 98. { I also have a few as issue stocks. }

To each their own.

BTB, I have more than a few 700s, in fact shot my 40X in HP for a number of years, that`s a 700, really, changed barrels twice, each having, by count, more than 19,000 rounds down them. 308. Never had an extracter fail, nor bolt fail. At the end of my run with HP, the action had become sloppy, practice with both dry fire and live fire will do that, so reamed the action 10 thous over, and new bolt body from PT&G. It`s now in a different configuation and cal. Short or long actions, I`ve never experienced problems.

So as stated, if one just wants to shoot something in 8x57, get a Rem Classic. No expensive farting round, tho to be honest,I did change the "J" lock.

Clear as mud??

I think we're in Mausers and Military Rifles for a reason. I would not consider the 8x57mm JS Mauser a traditional choice, or a proper chambering in a Remington 700. I think the 700 has served well for it's intended purpose, but I think the '98 Mauser provided better service, especially in this chambering.

Let's see, there have been about 100 million M98s made in 8x57 (and another 25+ million in other calibers) - there's no way their availability can compete with Remington 700 Classics in 8x57. Case closed. crazy
