I loaded the original Barnes 225 X bullet to 2821 in my 25" barrel Whelen back in the day. It certainly was a good killer. The newer grooved bullets are an great improvement in design as engraving pressures go down and accuracy goes up it seems. Putting to work these newer powders behind them, seems to make the 35 Whelen about as good as it gets in the hunting Big game world in my opinion.

Absolutely, the 225 TSX and RL15 at 2700 was the first load I worked for my CDL back when I got it. I shot a few deer with the 200 PSP Rem Factory ammo with less than great results. After that, the TSX cleaned a few bucks, bulls and bear. It was a good killer and looking back it worked as well or better than 250 PT's. I am really liking the 200 TTSX though, faster and seems to be a drill.

I got banned on another web site for a debate that happened on this site. That's a first

Col. Whelen knew what he was doing and several generations of sportsmen bore this out in the game fields of the world. Thirty odd years ago I sent a pre'64 M/70 to Randall Redman to be rebored into a .35 Whelen, it has been my go to rifle for whitetail ever since. I shoot 200gr. Hornady RN bullets using data from Ken Waters Pet Loads, they group into 3 shot cloverleaf groups @ 100yds. I also load 225gr. Sierra Game King bullets, powder with the 200gr. is IMR 3031 and with the 225gr. IMR 4064. When I got the rifle back from rebore I did extensive load development and testing, the 225gr. SGK gave the best accuracy. Both bullets perform equally well on whitetails taken at ranges of +/- 100yds.
