The auction ran all day. I was on the auction for hours. My internet dropped on the lot before the rifle I wanted. My internet came back on the lot after the rifle I wanted. I'm sure the neighbors heard many very bad words coming from my house. There will be alcohol flowing tonight. Life sucks sometimes.

Looks like we have th same taste in rifles and conditions. I would have paid 950 for that guy if the stock has no cracks. Sorry for your loss

Since it's an 1895 carbine, I'd have paid more.

Listed as a Model 99. Pretty clear they didn't know what they were selling.

Not that it doesn't have problems.. wrong forearm to start with. SAV 303 stamped on the barrel as well(?). Wrong sights. Little finish. Wood slightly sanded.
But it's an 1895 carbine.
I'm going to take this as a sign that I was supposed to save my money for something nicer that'll be showing up.
Right? That must be it.. I'm sure it's it... Sniff..

I guess I am on old careful Scot, but how could you call that an 1895 carbine? Almost but not quite perhaps, but reminds me of the old joke about the family axe…my daddy replaced the head and I replaced the handle….I have my great uncle’s SRC intact (one of my cousins did a very respectful refinish of the wood years ago), and it has clearly been used and respected…..now that might be worth some consideration in a sale, but as a “family gun” it will never be sold as long as there are males in my family.

It was a sign.
There was a reason you didn't get that gun, you just don't know what it is yet....

I guess I am on old careful Scot, but how could you call that an 1895 carbine? Well.. 1895 serial number, saddle ring carbine, 22" barrel, 1895 carbine buttplate/buttstock. Obviously has an 1899 or 99 forearm on it. Nothing exists with an 1895 carbine buttstock/buttplate and saddle ring except an 1895 carbine.

Was the bolt an 1895 bolt or early 1899? Savage did convert some 1895 SRCs (3 known) to 1899 bolt, shortened barrel to 20 inches. Perhaps this was another method of converting unsold 1895 SRCs to 1899???? Too bad you missed it .... would have been fun to inspect closely.

too bad. the 1895 forearm and barrel band would be hard to find but 1895 serial number and 22" barrel means it must have the 1895 barrel address, Marlin JM or J stamp etc.

Well it's not the end of the world. Once I was severely sore about selling a waffle top Marlin 35 Remington only later to stumble upon a 1980 limited run Remington 760 35 Remington that served me better. I also passed on a Remington 700 CDL in 35 Whelen only to find a 700 limited Classic in the same caliber that had more character. There will be more. I attended Savage Fest in Sauk City Wisconsin a year ago, but must have missed it this year. There was alot of nice stuff for sale there. Right now I may have an eye out for a 99 in 30-30 made in the 20's.

Outages like that are pretty rare these days. Did you try to fire up a wifi hotspot on your phone? Works for me when we visit relatives with no internet.

Momma said there's gonna be days like this... It went down literally just seconds before the lot was on. I'd have been hard pressed to even log in on a second device if I'd been prepared. And yeah, I do have a couple devices that could have provided a hot spot. Just no time. Don't know for sure whether the bolt was an 1895 or 1899 bolt. Barrel was listed as 22", so it might have gotten the $5 upgrade with new bolt but it didn't get a different barrel.

Aren't the early 1899 bolts the same as 1895s? I have an 1899 made in 1899 and from what I can tell the bolt is the same as an 1895. However I don't have an 1895 to compare it too, just pictures.

Same dimensions, yes. For $5 they would swap the bolt and a few internal parts. The list of what was included is in the 1900 catalog repro somewhere, if you have one of those.

The major difference was the change of the cocking indicator to a rocker on top of the bolt instead of the hole in the bolt with stamping on the firing pin.

Yep.
"It is possible to convert the 1895 model into the 1899 model, for which there is a charge of $5.00. This change necessitates a new breech-bolt, hammer indicator, sear, firing pin, hammer, extractor and retractor."

Oh hell !
I wondered what that thundering roar coming from up North was 😉
But you are correct, it was Fate. A better one is about to come out of a family closet in NE. For less dollars … wait ! … let’s not confuse optimism with hallucination and just stick with “a better one” 😁

I had that happen and called the number listed for the auction house. A polite lady answered. I frantically told her I had been bidding on an item and the internet dropped me. It was a soft bid sale, so the guy bidding agains me extended the item 3 minutes when he bumped me. She asked my max bid then asked me to hold. She bid one more time at the next increment, which extended it 3 more minutes. With ten seconds left she did a count down and said you got it. It was a local sale with pick up only. She said, “ When you get here, don’t go to the cashier, come to the office. I couldn’t get you logged back in, so I bid for you on the house number.” So I got it.
I'm not greedy, I just want one of each.

That is a shame. I have two 1895's but I have never laid eyes on a carbine.
Home for wayward neglected 99's.
