I've been wanting this rifle for quite a few years and finally was able to find one in .284. I don't know how it ended up here since we're all tight-asses that won't pony up. LOL Are there any records of production on these?

It's going hunting at my earliest convenience.

Scope is a 1.25-4. Figured I do most of my hunting inside 400 yards so it'll be fine. I've heard you guys talk about the differences in engraving on the PE's but I've got only one other to compare it to so I'm curious if they're the same pattern.

If Savage still built rifles like this they could make an Oregon version with weed engraving on it. LOL

Beautiful rifle.

I'd think twice about taking it hunting though.

Send us pictures of it after you drop it on a pile of rocks.

It's bigger than that for me. I've been blessed to be able to play with different rifles over a lifetime and this one has eluded me for years. I'm going to hunt it and enjoy every minute of it. Someone else can worry about it after I'm gone.

Absolute Beauty Roy!

I appreciate the investment, waiting and searching, (, tightening of one's ass and wad, etc.) it's taken to allow You to hunt with it!
Bravo!

There are production records

There are 3 different finishes

There are more than 3 different engraving style

Eastern style, Western style also differences within each style

It was just said there are no collectors on this so who the hell cares???

Some guys didn't care for my 1929 K after some one carved his initials in the buttstock of that hand picked Walnut. But, now that I found out whose initials are JM, I could probably run over to Carmel-by-the-Sea, and stand in front of Jo Mora's house and get more for his carving, than I could for the gun?

I'm sure Roy will take the utmost of care while in the field with that rifle, anyway, I hope so.

I closely compared the 308 to this one and they are "identical" patterns, with many minor differences.

Do you know if this is eastern pattern, western pattern, or ????

The scenes lead me to believe this would be western, but how the hell would I know.

Magnificent rifle, hardly gets any better than that for me. I know lots on here love the real old ones and I get that, but I could probably find a place for it somewhere!!!

The .284 is a very underrated cartridge. With a little better marketing, greater availability of rifles and better reviews by the gunwriters, I believe it would be enjoying at least the same level of popularity as the 7mm-08 Remington does today.

There are three .284 rifles in our family, two Savage 99’s and one Winchester Model 88. All are well proven.

It's zeroed at 100 yards now, although it's a rather large zero! I suspect I could 1 1/2" with a good rest and I'm not going to do any load develop for this right now so it is what it is for now.

I love that old chair damnesia. I think the rifle is going to need some load development but for now I just shot what I had for another 284.

I’ve been a 99 fan since I was a kid, which I’m afraid to say was more than a few decades ago, but I can’t say I know much about this variant. For the undereducated amongst us, what’s the story on this make of 99?

Produced between 1965 and 1970. Production was about 500. Available in 243, 284 and 308. We know at least some were engraved by German engravers. There are a lot of subtle variations in the engraving. I pictured quite a few in my book on engraved and special feature Savage 99's.

Beautiful rifle Roy.

I still have my 300 EG that was engraved by Zehner.

The # Of 99 DE's 1965 23, 1966 99, 1967 73, 1968 216, 1969 97, Total 508

This was done as a hand count from the Savage Log Books

as a hand count it could have missed one.

I do not believe the 13 Blued 99 DE''s are this count.

All the blued DE's are in 284

do you have a breakdown on the calibers for the 99PE's and DE's?

Thanks, Fug!

David, as I understand it they did not count them by caliber. Only models by year.

There were five in a rack at a local a shop on consignment about 5 years ago, didn’t even bother looking at them…..should have paid more attention.

Good call. I like the way you think. Now to go find one.

I am curious if this is a east or west version but nobody knows or chose not to answer?

The east / west is really the 99DE, which has either coniferous trees or deciduous trees on the bottom panel.

All the 99PE's show both pine trees and a large deciduous tree on the left side. Yours looks like probably a later style, likely engraved in Japan.

I dunno, but I'm thinking you should swap the stocks out for a set of eBay bought EC Bishop stocks for field use!

On the other hand you gotta swap out those rings for something more deserving of that 99. Maybe some color case hardened Talleys if they make a base for the 99.

The story on the rings is I bought them locally thinking I was going to shoot the rifle right away. One horse town and all. A side benefit I hadn't considered is driving all you old fuddy duddy's wild with them.

And I bet the seller didn't even make the sales pitch of "driving fuddy duddys" nuts would constitute an additional value to the purchase!

The 110 PE's I have only had my hands on one and if memory serves it was a '06, did they make that in .308. I might tale a peak around for one of them.

I have the original box for a 99PE in 284. Shoot me the serial number and I'll take a look at the box and let you know if its yours... obviously, you will end up with the box if its yours.... its not in great shape, but hey, its the original box and should be with the original gun.

If it isn't Fireball's PE I'll take it if it matches my 284 PE serial #1139589.

Even if the S/N on the gun doesn’t match the S/N on the box there’s no downside to having a genuine 284 PE box to house the gun.

My PE is the right gun WITH THE RIGHT BOX. Anything else is just a gun, albeit, a great gun to add to a collection of Savage history, and a box.

I’ve seen two or three pe boxes but are usually in bad shape. Longbeardking you have a unicorn set.
