I’m no farmer but if I were and I was needing a hay baler what would you all get, John Deere? New Holland? Case?

Sitting here enjoying a relaxing day with a cool breeze, contemplating perhaps dozing off, at peace with the world, and you have to bring up those damned things. Whatever you do, avoid a New Holland with a Wisconsin engine.

those summers of my youth, 90 degrees with no shade throwing bails onto a trailer in a field that never ends. It was good money for a kid with nothing better to do.

then we drive down the road to the barn and see a guy with a chute from the bailer to the trailer pushing the bails with a 2 man crew.

I do remember them being tempermental bastards though. Pretty sure it was a New Holland

Mee-maw and Paw-Paw had us tie them by hand with old shoelaces.

Automatic transmissions are for pussies.

Way to ruin a good thread. Now the cloud of gnats that follow you around will be posting.

Have been around hay bales since my teens, when as some have already mentioned it was common to hire teenagers to do the picking-up and stacking.

But after high school worked full-time on a ranch in southeastern Montana for a while, where the owner bought one of the first automatic stackers, which was pulled behind a tractor and picked up the then-standard small bales. He almost immediately contracted with some of his neighbors to stack their hay, which in those days were always the small, square bales. But I still had to go out and align some of the the bales so the machine could pick 'em up.

Also interesting that while 79S correctly spelled "balers," many if not most of the posters spell it "bailer." Though Sam also uses the traditional spelling.

Yep!

If I recall correctly the auto-stacker that rancher bought was a New Holland, but could be wrong. It was a while ago!

Sensei I apologize for insulting you in your house. I’m ready to cut my pink off to show my loyalty to you.
