I'm working on a stacked leather hunting knife. This one will have CPM154 stainless steel blade with a brass guard. Spacers will be brass and green. I'll try to post a pic of every step so you guys can see how this knife is progressing.

So here's a pile of material. I rough cut the blade. Heat treat is next

no scandi, full flat grind. Wonder if I should make a video of the build or just pictures?

Yes. Thank you

IMO- the couple of stacked leather handles I've
done taught me to cut em to a rough oval or
whatever shape beforehand. The ones I took
down from squares were a genuine P.I.T.A.
Good Luck. Looks promising

I just do it from squares. A 36 grit belt makes short work of the leather. It's going to be something like this

That is a very handsome knife, Dan. Appears it would do about 95% of the chores out in the hunting and camping fields anyone would encounter.

took a brass bar for the guard and fitted it to the blade. Some trial and error but I think I got it.

All shaped, heat treated. Guard is fitted and spacers and leather cut. Ready to rough shape the guard and then braze a bolt to the tang.

Interesting to watch it come together. Sent this thread to a buddy and he commented on the size of your hands. He thought you must have pretty good dexterity for having softballs on the end of your arms...

Pretty sure he wants this knife, too... He's Jonesing...

I ended up with 38 pieces. Now to epoxy and stack them in order.

Roughed out with a 36 grit belt just takes a few minutes

Heat up the leather and let some bee's wax absorb into it. We're almost done

Looking very good. Two questions if you don't mind. Did you get all your compression for the stack by tightening butt plate? Do you have a preferred epoxy or will any good epoxy work?

yes the end cap compresses the leather stack. I use E120 epoxy for this type of knife because you need a long work time.

Your post shows why real custom knives are expensive and why custom knife makers never get rich. I really enjoy this post.

The green spacers with the brass really pops. I'm not fixated on "looks" for most of the knives I use...but I do appreciate looking at one like that!

It probably belongs somewhere in a museum or on display. But I'm gonna use it and let any marks on it lead to stories...

Dan,

Beautiful knife!

Yet, can you provide handle/blade/OAL?

Also, blade stock thickness and thickness behind the edge?

Also, you said said above CPM154, then later "ramping up to 1950 degrees." What is your full protocol for CPM154 and final hardness?

Thanks, Dan...I'm interested cause I have one I'd like kinda duplicated...

Edited to add: I just now researched the "sad year" comments...

SO sorry, Dan...

Haven’t used this knife yet but I took it to the coffee shop to show it to the bulls gang at breakfast.
Everyone wants to know who made it.

Wonder if I need to do an elk hunt to justify it?
