I won the bubbaed Rentzschke engraved 99F on gun broker. I now have a consecutive numbered pair. Anyone have a 99F stock they want to part with?

I'm comfortable with the price. I'll get rid of the ugly recoil pad. If I can't find a buttstock I'll reshape the stock and put on a proper buttplate. The GB rifle's serial # is 928917. I already have 928916

We have only turned up 5 so far that I have data on and that has been in recent years. Four are 308's, in .243 and David has it.

Two Rentsches', in two calibers and consecutively serialed... well done!

My rifles aren't the only consecutive numbered engraved 99's. Brent Geistweidt has two consecutively numbered 99DE's, both 284 W. The serial #'s are 1,145,395 and 1,145,396. They both have blued receivers. They are covered in my engraved Savage book pages 143 and 144.

Evidently Mr. Rentzschke was a graduate of Southern Illinois University class of '67. Can't 'splain that one. Yet. smile
This would have been after his time at Savage (~1956-1960) and as he went on to Springfield Technical Community College in MA. (~1967-1978)

I think Rentzschke was the last of the in-house Savage engravers. Though only there for ~4 years and performed other functions as well.
By that time, Savage was basically out of the in-house engraving business as Rentzschke engraved a few 99F's and the One Millionth 99.
It appears Savage hired out engraving after that and that included work by Rentzschke and probably some others who remain unknown at this time.
Probably a career change driven by the engraving climate and other factors.

This is one of them. Uniquely different engraving pattern and not like 3 of the other Rentzschke rifles that utilized the "A" engraving pattern.
I suspect Rentzschke did this one as well as it seems his 99F's were done about the same time period. I'm guessing a few warm ups before he did the One Millionth Rifle. Who knows?
Anybody seen this one in hand?
I wonder if #500,001 left Savage via the R&D collection dispersal as well. ??

James D. Julia sold out some time ago. It has to have before that.
That sure looks like Rentzschke's really tight scroll work.
My new Rentzschke should be here tomorrow. But I'm not holding my breath. It's already been delayed one day.

That is a really interesting rifle. I'm glad you got it. Since it's a 308 it obvious that it is actually a post 900,000 action that Savage used a serial # that they had saved after the move to Chicopee.

Your new rifle Serial 928XXX dates to 1957.
I am curious what the lever boss/inspector stamp says. ??

While you are at it, check the .243 too. cool

It came at 3:33 yesterday. Not as nice as the other one but OK for the price. There is no assembly # on the forearm. Recoil pad looks too new to have been on the rifle for very long. The scope lenses were filthy.
Both rifles have assembly code 11I.
here are some pics.

Thanks David.
11I = 1957 for both rifles.

vs. 500,001 = 11L = 1960

11 = same inspector Roland Bienvenue

Savage never gave them to Cody is what Cody has told me.

The last they have is some intermittent shipping records for serial numbers 400000-436558.

JTC indicated he found the factory records for S/N 928916 on microfiche, not in a ledger.

The tenor of the letter was that Savage kept records on microfiche during this time period and that is where JTC looked for and found the record for 928916. My sense is that the microfiche was kept in a different location, it still exists and no one even thought of sending it to Cody.

260Remguy has spoken of seeing them being resold by some retailers in the northeast.

I seem to remember it was late 80's, probably as they were facing/going through bankruptcy that led to Coburn taking over.

A guy named Michael Burt has one. I thought he is a member on here. I'll check with him and see if he minds the serial number being posted on the forum.
#917 shot pretty good till the scope fogged up.

Well IF the microfiche still exist, this may be a job for David Royal and Ron Coburn to get thru to Savage and identify them.
Then figure out whose hands to get them in. Hopefully one of us that could analyze them, digitize them and make them available.
Ya gotta have hope! smile

Mike Burt's Rentzschke is serial #928,927(only 9 and 10 digits off from my rifles), LBC11J, caliber 308. He wasn't able to get a letter.
Here is a copy of my JTC letter on 928,916. Note that he said the info was on microfilm.

I called the Cody museum. They said they don't have data for anything after 1941. I then called the Savage factory. They said they only had data for 1995 and later and that they definitely did not have the microfilm for the 50's and 60's.
I'll try to get in touch with Ron Coburn later. I've got to get on with my day. Hungry horses, a rifle that needs to be zeroed in, get ready to hunt tomorrow, etc.

I'll try to get in touch with Ron Coburn later. I've got to get on with my day. Hungry horses, a rifle that needs to be zeroed in, get ready to hunt tomorrow, etc.
Thanks for trying David.
I guess Mr. Callahan is the only person who may shed light on the microfilm. Sigh…

put a Leupold 1 1/2 X 4 scope on the Rentzschke. Zeroed it and shot 2 groups, 1 1/4" and 1 1 5/8". Nosler 150 partition, 43 g. RL15 and 210 primer. This load gave good groups with the EG 308 and the DE 308.
It hailed before I could get the target in. the target is that white thing flapping the breeze in the background. It was in the ditch before the hail stopped. Shoulda snowed good in the mountains. Can't see them yet for clouds. Going elk hunting tomorrow with the EG 308. Will take the Rentzschke when the weather is better.

I've read ~100 too.
Does that come via Roe and ledger access? or some other knowledge?

Comment from Roe, not from the ledger.

I wonder what the story is on a 308 with serial # 764145. Another later action an earlier serial #? There doesn't appear to be anything significant about the serial # unlike 500,001. Or essentially a single shot?

Yeah, me too! Since it's and R&D gun it's hard to tell what the internals look like. I sorta thought maybe they used that one to fit up the magazine change. It might be milled out for the new rear rotor support? If not - it's just a single shot. But doubt they would do that?

764145 wasn't finished until 1960.. letter says an 11L boss stamp on it.

So I'm guessing it's a 900,000 series receiver with just an earlier serial number stamped on it for some odd reason. Kind of like 500,001. Why? Darned good question.

I think the magazine rework is the answer. I can't imagine it leaving the factory a single shot.

30 years between Roe’s factory letter noting that Rentzschke did the engraving on 500,001 and JTC’s factory letter indicating Rentzschke engraved 928,916. No one even knew these factory engraved guns existed until 10 years ago.

Agree. 764145 was the tail end before Savage (almost) skipped the 800,000 series and created the 900,000 cutoff.
BTW - 500,001 S.N is engraved vs. stamped. It's a Savage thang.

Yea, I have no direct knowledge and I believe Roe's comments, but if there were ~100 or even 50 you'd think we see them occasionally. ??

Roe knew of Rentzke, I think he knew him personally when he worked there. Callahan also had some information on them. So they weren't totally unknown, except to us.

There are 60 Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation rifles out there.

How many have you seen sell in the last 15 years? Probably similar to how many Rentzke rifles we've seen sell. So it's not impossible.. and it's possible there's somebody out there that owns 20 of 'em. We just don't know.
I'd be surprised if it's really 100 tho. Probably lower, just as a gut feel.
