Did Savage ever produce a glossy version?

Not sure what you mean by glossy, but the 60s seemed like the era of gaudy and Savage was no exception to that rule. I never saw a finish like Browning used but I have seen plenty that hurt the eyes to look at.

There are deluxe rifles with high finished stocks. Also, some factory varnished models over the years. And of course after market tongue oil, varnish, etc.

Do you have a specific example in mind? That would be helpful in order to comment further.

These types. I wasn’t sure if they made any from the factory like this. Similar to Remington BDL or Browning BLR.

It is true.. there was "extra finish" available as an option, and some of the early 1899's were just very nicely finished like Rick's.

It can be extremely difficult to tell if a shiny stock on a minty gun is original or somebody simply added some True Oil or similar, as Rick said.

I don't think I'll use a 22 HP on an elk.

Killed an antelope once with a 300 Weatherby. Was elk hunting, no elk around and a nice buck antelope showed up. Needless to say I shot him in the neck. I don't know how to post a funny face or I would have started this reply with one.

David, find the "use full editor " button at the bottom of the reply/input box. That adds all the options buttons.

Without the spaces. I type fast, so that's faster for me than going to full editor. grin

As you saw there certainly were glossy finishes but as I mentioned above I have not seen a high build epoxy gloss finish of the likes of Browning on any 99. If anyone knows how to strip “Epoxo-Browning” finishes I’d love to know!
