I just sighted in my dad’s old 1968 with his last box of 150gr Winchester Super X Silvertips. It has an old gloss Leupold M8 4X on top. I am hoping to take the first deer of the season with it.

You need to find some period correct see-throughs and a Redfield. smile

That’s how my dad’s is set up; same vintage but 06. Amazing find. I would have scooped that too.

That's a beauty. You are pulling it out of the box and it isn't even Christmas yet!!! I would have scoped it too.

Neat rifle op.
I am starting to use more mini-skinny scopes myself. Just set up both my AE m94's a 7-30 & a 307 with M8 4x's also have a bubba'ed 03 Springfield in 300 win mag with a m8 4x. Most would shake their heads and go to cussing but damnit all anyway I am finding less is more. Flame away..mb

Nice! In '68 that was my dream rifle except I wanted a 7mm. Made a deal with my dad that I'd get it for my 14th birthday if I saved half the money. Imagine my excitement when on that fateful day I unwrapped a brand new..........Remington 742 .308 cry

Jealous. I like to collect guns from 68 (my birth year). I have a '06 BAR from 68 but if you ever decide to move that one I'd like first dibs grin

For me that reason is usually because I've made some bad decisions that I need to pay for.

Well, my dad's is a .30-06 1968 (assuming - my mom gave it to him as a wedding present in 1968). He used the open sights until the early '80s when it got a Bushnell Scope Chief 1.5-4.5.

Nice find. Congrats!

Bought one about 6 - 8 yrs ago with a Burris 6-24 or something like that on it
Beautiful wood , metal looked great , it flat ass shot , had a real fancy for 150 gr sp Estate ammo
Don’t know what year it was , but definitely in the 60’s I’d venture to say
One of those you wish you could buy back
If I remember right I stole it too
Thinking around 500-600 , can’t remember.
Fine looking and functioning rifle
Kenneth

Congratulations!

One of dad's best days was when he sold his 1968 Browning BAR .308 jamming rifle. The first BAR's from the late '60's had a single plunger ejector in their bolt face. That rifle stove piped as many cases as it ejected. It went to several gun smiths and nothing fixed the issue until Browning put two plunger ejectors into the later BARs. That hinged magazine was hanging open a few too many times walking in the woods as well. That rifle weighed a lot for a .308 and my buddy's 7mm RM was even worse weight wise. I hope you like your .270 BAR better than dad or Tom liked theirs.

My other auto is a .45

Well that's interesting. I don't doubt your experience but, both my dad and then I have shot the snot out of his .30-06 which has the single plunger and I don't recall a single malfunction.

The last straw that doomed that rifle was when an 8 point came running over the hill at dad’s stand and he got one running shot at it and the fired cartridge never cleared the ejection opening. He said that he was ready to wrap that rifle around a tree because he could never trust it. Amazingly the buck ran past his stand and fell over doa. A nice enough looking rifle, but the m100’s and the m742’s of that era worked better and didn’t cost as much.

I've always thought these were heavier than I would want a rifle but I'm in the "carry more than shoot" camp. If I sat in deer stands I'd be super interested in one of these.

I have a 1990 Browning BAR in 270 Win., it is amazing accurate and has never jammed but is a tad heavy compared with my Ruger 77 270 Win.
