The Winchester 88 has dual front locking lugs, while the Savage 99 is a rear locking design, so less action "spring"?

I can't see how JES could do the rebore/rechamber without removing the barrel from the action in either the Savage 99 or Winchester 88.

I mean.. too short of throat so the bullet is jammed into the lands would create pressure spikes.

And maybe the Model 88 handles higher pressure spikes better than the 99.

But that's a chamber cutting flaw.

Likely not. I'm sure much of deals with factory ammo and powder. I'm thinking there hasn't been anything new added to the 358 in 400 years, but the 338, yes. I would think the 338 is loaded to max potential, with new powders than the 358. Pressure curves and all that.

I've had sticky cases with the 308 and factory ammo.

A friend of mine just had sticking cases in both a savage 99 and winchester 88!!! hornady factory 308 ammo!! winchester and green box remington worked fine.

Rem green box is sticky in my 250. It's gotta be something about the brass. Handloads of any stripe mild to wild in RP brass also occasionally stick in it, whereas I can load HDY brass to the gills and never have an issue.

The Hornady 300 Sav ammo is sticky in my EG, but that stuff is smoking hot in comparison to older factory offerings and anything I load for it. I shot one box of it to make some empties a year or two ago, and about half of them extracted hard.

Sales-pitched new factory ammo, New reloading manuals, and the incessant internet jabber-wocky, ..pick any cartridge.., all seem to tend towards "hot" loads, with super-long ultra slippery drag coeffiecint slugs.

And everyone seems to be a wannabe sniper, talking casually about their 500 yard groups and 1000 yrd consistency....??? ..please,.., hit the dirt and give me 5- shots, now!

A 99 in 338 federal, using careful roll-your-own ammo seems like a pretty slick deer-getter to me, Congratulations on getting Yours done and in the woods!!

Thank you. I put a Leupold 3.5 x 10 on it, but scope is touching the barrel with Burris Rings. I ordered them by mistake years ago. I need the signature Zee Rings. They are a touch higher. I have a set coming. I had hoped to sight it in this week, will do that next weekend. I’ll work my way up a half grain at a time.

I love my 338Fed on a Rem 600. Your 99 has way more cool factor. Most of the common faster burning powders work well. Mine did not like Winchester LR primers though. Brass is still out there and can be found but not easily. I have yet to have any whitetail take a step after getting hit with a 200gr Hornady SP (not SST) or Fed Fusion.

Back when i shot factory ammo my 308's were all sticky with Hornady ammo, I think it just flat out hotter than others. Stickiest ever was a 250 that was rebarreled to a 22-250, it shot the white box winchester really well, Hornady beyond sticky i would characterize as STUCK.

I finally got the mounts, fired about 30 rounds through it, used starting load for 4, bumped up half grain at a time until a grain below max. I saw no signs of excessive pressure. It is wonderfully accurate, some 3 shot groups touching as I moved to get it on center and an inch high at a hundred. Recoil was nothing with the Barnes 160’s. I’m extremely pleased with the job Chris did on the rifle. I got the rifle back, it was a week before he sent me the invoice. Shilen barrel. I am going with 42 grains of H-4198

In my reloading experience the model 88 was near the bolt action loading. .308 win.

The model 99 would get sticky before either of them.

The Marlin 356 was marketed to the public, the 307 never made it. The action couldn’t hold up.

IMO the less constricted the cartridge is between powder and bullet diameter the less pressure is involved.

Sweet! Mine did so well with factory 185s that I never tried anything else. Please let us know which recipes this one prefers.

BTW, for the guy who saw some selling for 145 per box, I paid 40 at my LGS.

I have a 336 SC that has been rechambered from 30-30 to 307. No excess pressure issues to date.
