Seen a Weatherby MKV 270 Weatherby Magnun that a guy shot a 270 Winchester in. He had borrowed it from a friend. It broke the stock almost into @ the front of the action. Luckily no one was hurt.

Saw 3 .222 rounds fired from a .223. Decent group too.

Two very experienced shooters and reloaders in our club, both past presidents, were shooting multiple guns on the range. Both had Remington 700's in 270 Win. Both also were shooting 308 Win rifles and both shot a 308 though a 270. I am NOT a Remington 700 fan by any measure, however, I must give credit where credit is due. Both guns action locked up and gunsmiths had to un-screws the barrels to get the remnants removed. Upon inspection both rifles were deemed fit and both are still being shot with the proper ammo. Odd things happen. Just last week I was sighting in a friends 270 with Remington factory ammo. One round did not want to chamber. Upon inspection somehow a 30/06 Remington round had found its way into the 270 box. I have heard of old timers that ran out of 44/40 cartridge and instead used 38/40's that they wrapped thin leather around the bullet itself till it fit tightly in the cylinder or chamber. In the NRA museum is a Japanese Arisaka rifle that was used by a man for many years. Common practice after the war was to rechamber their 7.7 cartridge Arisaka war trophy to a 30/06 and never mind about the slightly oversize bore. The owner had done just that and had hunted the rifle for decades, constantly complaining about excessive recoil. Upon closer inspection, the original rifle was not a 7.7 but a 6.5. The NRA doubting the story, fired the rifle several times with no damage.

A friend did a 280 Rem in a 7mm Rem Mag Weatherby. The floor bottom metal needed to be replaced which I did for him. I was not there for the event.

Having a hard time believing 7-08 in a .270 would blow up a gun. Same sized bullet, .121" difference in shoulder.

I encountered an old timer that wouldn't listen to a know-it-all kid, me. He was not a gun guy but hunted every year. Seeing him shoot his only rifle, a British SMLE, using 303 SAVAGE ammo. I explained to him that both were 303's, they were not the same cartridge. Showing him an expended case did not convince him and he said he had been using that ammo for years and to mind my own business. I would occasionally find one of his fire formed cases when walking in the woods. Cleaning up our range one day I saw a odd, expended round on the ground. It was quite obvious what had happened. Someone was shooting a 300 Win Mag in a rifle chambered for 300 Weatherby.

300 Win Mag fired in a 300 Weatherby MK V.
When the guilty buzzard bought the 300 Weatherby at a local gun shop, he asked for some ammo but he thought the store was asking too much for a box. He went to a nearby Walmart and asked for a box of “300 Magnum”. I don’t know too many Walmarts that carry Weatherby ammo but the clerk found some 300 Win Mag that was MUCH cheaper than the gun store wanted. He bought a box and drove to our hunting club to get sighted in.
A couple of days later I drove to our club to test some loads. I always pick up any fired cases and when I picked up a few cases he had left behind, I thought they looked a little strange ….a Weatherby double radius shoulder but a very short neck. Checking the headstamp, it was “300 Win mag”. DOH!!! 😳
I don’t know how they shot but he didn’t catch too much flak over it. It probably stopped after two or three weeks. 😉

When they renamed the .280 the 7mm Express I saw a lot of 7 Mag. rifles damaged by the mixup. Remington was quick to go back to the .280 designation.

It probably stopped after two or three weeks. 😉 As a goof, I retrieved the 300 Win Mag cases fired in a 300 Weatherby and knocked out the primer, installed a new primer, filled the case near full with corn meal, and seated a 71 grain fmj bullet for a 32 ACP into the case. A bizarre looking, extremely short necked, long case with a minacule bullet topping it off. I gave several away to cartridge collectors.

You can shoot 300 Winmag ammo in a 300WBY 7 Remmag in a 7 WBY and use 264 Winmag brass necked down for a 257 WBY. The difference is the loads are lower PSI on the Winmag and the necks are shorter, if you reload the Winmag brass to use in the WBY after 2 or 3 times the brass will flow or grow to the same lenth as the WBY. The brass is not as stout as the WBY so you can't load to WBY specs but it gets you out of a pinch when no WBY ammo is available.
