MN winters must be different than many other places. Here I want a truck with a good heater. I don't want to be outside following a snowblower or sitting on a tractor getting snow in my face at 20 below zero.

Brother in Law used to plow family members with his Ford F250, he was not gentle but even at that it was constantly broke, springs (oddly enough rear springs as well) and transmission (manual) were trouble spots. Can't see a 1/2 ton holding up very well doing much plowing.

Worked with a guy that had a 1/2 ton Dodge dually (early 80’s?) 4x4 called a snow command. He claimed they sold them up north for snow plows.

Do you have electronic steering? If so no snowplow.

As long as you're using it for your own driveway or a friend, your truck should be OK.. But if you're gonna try some commercial lots, get a 3/4T and a heavier-duty plow.

FWIW, I plowed commercially for nine years ('73-'82) with an F-250 4X4 standard cab. Used a Western 8' plow at that time.. When I bought my '04 F-350 DRW CC LB 6.0 I upgraded to the 9'6" MVP+ Western - and it served me well. Finally got rid of it 6 years ago when I decided my tractor was all I need to clear anything I needed.

Never had an issue with any of the trucks I plowed with - no trans problems, front-end etc during the entire time..

1/2 tons are light for plowing.
For hauling and towing too!

You will be OK.

I'd put a couple hundred pounds in the bed, 2 or 3.
Rear chains if it's gonna be harder pushing.
The rear diff is almost always stronger, the front has more weight.
Rear weight and chains stress the tougher parts more.

Don't let it get deep.
Don't rip and tear.

Tough as hell setup, or marginal?
Don't matter.
The weak link will always be the nut behind the wheel!




Are you type that can break a steel wheel wheelbarrow, or an anvil?
If so, you need a tougher truck.

Worked in a shop in the '90s. Wr installed and repaired plows.

Saw tons of trucks, 1/2 -1 tons with torn up parts and cracked frames.

Manufacturers may sell plow ready trucks but the frames aren't set up to be hammered on.

Thats just a diesel pickup for you. I have buds that run Dodge, Ford and GM. If they use those trucks much they're having front ends rebuilt. A pickup isn't made for all of that weight up front.

If one needs a truck then buy an actual truck.

I've had a early 90s 1/2 ton Dodge 4x4 beater as a dedicated plow rig for the last 15 years servicing 6 properties with long driveways, maybe close to a mile in total.

Gotta long term tenant that plows for me for a rent reduction.

She's dialed in with that plow rig, she works within its means.

If a couple feet is predicted she don't wait til the last flake falls, 10 or 12 inches on the ground and She's pushing snow.

Mechanical maintenance has been minimal over the years with her operating that rig.

Blows my mind when I see a plow bolted onto a 50/60 thousand dollar new truck that combos as a guys daily driver..

60mph down the road hitting rough breaks and bouncing the plow hard, it ain't no wonder they bust stuff up.

I seen guys out there late in season slamming solid ice berms trying to push them back cause they didn't know where to put the snow early in the winter when they first started plowing..they'd torture the toughest piece of equipment they could get with their antics.

If I'd had a beater 1 ton to dedicate to plowing snow I'd probably of used it, but I had a 1/2 ton at the time I could semi retire for the job so we deal with it and it gets the job done.

Had a Northman mounted on 77 chevy half ton,350 engine ,heavy duty shocks and springs. I chained up all 4 and plowed snow in the hill country for 10 years ,only problem I ever had was broken transfer case chain.

Yep, they did make those Snow Command's & another called a Snow Fighter as well... non left, they rotted away decades ago... salted roads...
