I believe they are far more common than most people believe. Here in Texas I have found sign and seen them on every lease I have had. The only one I ever shot was in Wyoming back in 1979.

We had one on Haystack Rock during the summer.
Probably hunting shore birds or raiding nests.

I was bow hunting at the Ranch 5 or 6 years ago one evening and had one come in stalking the does at one of my feeders.
I was sure wishing I had my AR instead of my Bow and 3 arrows.

Dad had seen two on the Ranch before he passed.

I've seen several over the years, the best ~10 years ago.
Dad and I were driving up the Folsom road, east of Raton, and a young male crossed the road in front of us.
Unlike most times, he wasn't "flying low", just kind of trotting along. We both guessed a 2 year old - definitely tom.

I was bowhunting elk in September, in New Mexico. Sat in a blind by a water hole one evening, and saw one cow elk. We had a game camera on that waterhole. Checked that camera the following day. There was a mountain lion drinking in front of the blind, 30 minutes after I left the blind the previous evening.

If y’all was from Alabama y’all would see em all the time. Folks always seen black panthers and mountain lion around here. Just ask em, they’ll tell you about it. 🤣🤣🤣

All jokes aside, I know how strong bobcats are and how good of a hunter they are. I can only imagine what a Mtn lion can do and be stealthy. I’ve never seen one and probably won’t. But the pretty creatures.
