A question for you guys that do your own smithing............did you go to formal training? Have a background in machining? Just a knack for the smell of gun oil?

I'm getting to a retirement age, and have no plan to sit around.
There are only a few guys left that can actually "work" on a gun in this area and the ones that are left are between 80 and 150 it seems.

There may be some fight left in me to learn something new and help occupy my time between hunting season without having to sit my rear on the beach for weeks at a time. (that's the bride's plan)

So..........how did you guys get started?

Much of it comes natural if you are mechanically inclined. Tooling up does become pricy.

I went to trade school and then made a living at it for a decade. Had always been mechanically minded and picked up machining pretty quickly.

When I was in trade school there were a lot of retired fellows in my class who planned to do it as a retirement job.

I always knew I was not an original thinker!! This make me feel a little better.
