You pretty much summed up my first days of deer hunting. I had to wait until I was 15 to get a .270 Win.
Before then it was shotguns with buckshot or slugs.

This:

Ruger saw all this crazy demand and jumped in the ring with rifles priced twice what they are worth (in my opinion) and people are buying them as fast as they can be made. The other levergun makers are just riding the bandwagon until the wheels fall off the demand.

Ruger is offering Classics for $1300. NIB. Why not just buy a real nice used Marlin for $800? Marlins price is too much for me. I doubt they will ever make the Model 39A & M again and if so it will be $1300++.

Wow. I haven't been keeping up. I bought my 336cs 3030 JM i’m guessing in 1986/7. It was at a Service Merchandise in my town. It was on clearance as someone had bought it as a plinker for their kid and figured out it was too much gun and returned it. Every week it was marked down about $10. My hunting buddy and sort of my stand in big brother told me to keep checking on it every few days. I didn't have a hunting rifle at the time and about no money for one. It got down to $125 and I bought it. I had about enough money left until pay day for a green box of ammo and a lb of cheap hamburger. I used it for 3 years or so killin hogs in Florida. Pretty rough use in the swamp and sweaty hands. I bought a scoped ruger tanger sometime around 1989 in 30-06 and never used the Marlin again. Still in the safe. Pretty banged up for only using it for 3 years.

Deals are still out there. Today I am picking up a very clean 336-T that I paid $450 for. These guns simply don’t move around here, and the pawn shop is very eager to deal on them.
