big cow elk zilch, puny 308 EG one. Actually it's the 5th elk I've gotten with this rifle.
We got after her and another cow. The other one jumped a fence at full tilt, did an a-- over tea kettle, sent snow flying everywhere, jumped up after a couple seconds and took off.
The one I shot had run along parallel to the fence to the right side of the road. I jumped out of the Ranger, she turned towards the fence about 150 yards away still running fast, I led her a little, squeezed the trigger, she humped up, ran about 40 yards, started staggering, feel over, she was in her death throes when we got to her.
The bullet entered behind the left shoulder, went through a rib, clobbered the heart and lungs, went through a rib on the right side and exited with a tiny hole in the skin. The bullet must have been just about spent. It was a Nosler 150 grain Partition. Don't need no magnum for elk, or buffalo.

got it going again I think. I hadn't hunted this area before. Mike Long took Alan Lane and I out even though their licenses had expired. Thanks guys, can't hunt alone anymore.

I was really lucky. The weather has caused elk hunting to be poor this year. We had a wet spring and summer which provided plenty of feed up high where they go in the Summer. Then it snowed very little in the fall. Heavy snow in Oct and Nov will normally push them down during hunting season. They could still get to plenty of food up high and didn't come down like they usually do.
We only saw nine elk Saturday. Seven were bulls including some nice ones. Bull season ended Oct 31 so they were off limits. The two cows were pretty elusive. We saw them first thing in the morning but couldn't find them when we tried to close in on them. We saw them again about one PM and were able to get close. I don't usually take running shots but Sat was the next to the last day we could hunt on public land so I took the shot figuring I wouldn't get another shot before season ended. That heart shot couldn't have been any better. Pure luck. I've never killed an elk in mid day either.

Judging by her teeth she was 2 1/2 years old. Lotsa meat and really tasty.

the elk's ivories. they don't show much wear she was probably 2 1/2 years old. she will be real good eating. My wife will have ear rings made out of the ivories.
