This article appeared in a local paper this morning. It's about a federal progem to compensate ranchers for big game depredation. They say they've had it in WY and are expanding it to MT and ID. Is this another government boondoggle or is it something legit? Officials with the U.S. Department of Agriculture are expanding into Idaho and Montana a program that offers financial incentives to ranchers and agriculture producers who voluntarily participate in conservation programs for migratory big game animals.
The department is expanding the migratory big game initiative pilot program from Wyoming into Idaho and Montana, according to a press release issued by the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
For 2024, the program includes about $21 million in federal funding to begin the expansion, according to the USDA press release.
The program is designed to offer private landowners funding for the conservation of big game habitat in a way that allows them to keep their working lands productive, Lane Justus, the Idaho resource coordinator for the Western Landowners Alliance, said in a telephone interview Friday.
What are the goals of the USDA’s big game program?
The program is geared toward large migratory hooved animals, such as elk, deer or pronghorn. Justus said that the number of large mammals such as elk and deer on working private lands is growing due to factors such as population growth and animals moving away from hunters and recreation users on nearby public lands.
Justus said that comes at a cost to the landowner, such as elk competing with livestock for forage or luring additional predators to the land.

WY has been trying to protect migration corridors for years now, we have very large herds that migrate to winter range every year. Biggest threat to them is development on those migration corridors. Sounds like they are just expanding into other states now. Not a boondoggle if they can get lands protected from development. https://migrationinitiative.org/https://www.farmers.gov/sites/default/files/documents/factsheet-migratory-big-game.pdfhttps://www.nrcs.usda.gov/programs-initiatives/working-lands-for-wildlife/usda-migratory-big-game-initiative#:~:text=USDA's%20Migratory%20Big%20Game%20Initiative,for%20agricultural%20producers%20and%20landowners.

One of our biggest elk winter ranges is now home to the Sun Valley resort and surrounding subdivisions.

The word “predator” is mentioned and as far as I’m concerned that word has a totally different meaning when enlisted in any conversation involving the federal government.

We’ve been installing, and have more in the works, safe aninmal crossings…….they seem to be very effective! Years ago there were in excess of 600 deer/year killed between Kemmerer and Sage Junction….a distance of only about 25 miles. The kill numbers have been greatly reduced! Thankfully, much of Wyoming is not desirable for population expansion! memtb
