If the rest of the truck is good to go, wouldn’t bother me. But it still sucks to spend $5300 just before Christmas. Hopefully will outlast the truck.

I'd have dragged it out in front of the dealership and lit it on fire.

My last two Silverado 1500’s both needed new engines at less than 170K. Rebuilt engine costs the same as your transmission. I like a truck, but I pay dear for the privilege.

I broke my heart to pay that much on 9.5 year old truck. But the truck is in perfect running order and plan to keep it a long time.
If nothing else big goes wrong, I figure I'm good. but 140, 000 miles ought not to see the death of so many Chevy Silvarado transmissions.

options?
1. Sell it for almost nothing since it needed a transmission. Then buy an $80K truck to replace it? no way.
2. Put it up on blocks in the front yard and mow around it, but only weed eat around it monthly.

Seems a bit high to me, but hard to say... I don't know GM.

I have a guy in Catlett that does my Dodges for under $3k... typically $2,500+

Truthfully... models vary.

Asked Roger to price out a Ford Escape that lost one at 71k...

Trans is tiny, but still $4,700.

Apparently it is fairly common on the Escape.

My wife and I have both driven GM full size cars going back to the 90s. After 130000 miles the transmissions were on borrowed time We never had one completely fail but could tell they were close by the way they were shifting. My last truck I traded ar 147 K and the transmission would hammer in certain situations. I didn't trust it anymore.

Back side of Quantico... https://alltechtransmission.com/

Best transmission shop I know... GREAT GUYS... tell them I sent ya.

Roger and Mike keep a "Wall of shame" for the stuff I blow up... and then bring them. Just finished a billet 48RE for me... it will come with a "Leonard Proof" Warranty.

On the older 6.0 2500’s I’ve done 2 in the last 3 years that were $3,500. Just did a 2019 F-150 guy charged me $8k. No one made a reman 10sp and had to buy from ford directly. Had just paid $30k for the truck 8 weeks previous and My guy had only driven it a week or two. I hate fords.

My 2012 Silverado transmission went out at 130,000 miles. Also had to replace ball joints twice, blower motor, AC compressor, two steering racks, mass airflow censor, and the engine was beginning to sludge as well. All in all, I spent more on repairs over a few years than the truck was worth. The transmission was $4800. The transmission shop said 2010 and newer Chevrolet transmissions are one of the most common transmissions that he sees in his shop. When I was there, there were about fifty vehicles in the lot and a good 20-25 of them were GMs in that range. I got rid of it and bought a Toyota.

I drive Suburbans for my part time retirement job. A 2017, a 2018, and a 2019. The 2017, and 2018 both had to have the trans replaced at 130ish K miles. The 2018 is in now for a new engine at 215k miles. Glad the company is footing the bills.

My 2012 Suburban's transmission threw craps at 150k miles. New trans cost me $4,700 a couple of years ago. This is my 3rd Suburban, but there has got to be a better vehicle of this type/size.

Ever since I worked in a GM plant back in 1980 I’ve wondered why people are loyal to their brand.

When sufficient blowback was received from dealer/customer world about functional issues the “engineers” would come to the tool room and have us make changes to the dies or low pressure molds that they speculated might solve the problem. We’d then start making the changes while the part was in production with”new style” and “old style” parts all going out together. Let the consumer beta test the changes.

I just bought a 2012 GMC crewcab 2500 4x4, 6 L, 159k on the clock for 2,000 bucks. An OEM GM L90E trans and torque conv will run me 5200 bucks out the door. So I will have another pickup for around 8,000 with my labor (I'm less than worthless). From the price the OP mentioned, I'd say that is about right, if he got a good trans with some warranty. Monster Transmission quoted me 6,500 bucks...no way.

I have an 08 Chevy Impala with 83,000 mi. on it. SOmetimes after a stop I give it gas and it seems to pop into gear like I popped the clutch. Is this a sign that the tranny is going bad? I heard it might be a sensor . I got a sensor changed cause the check engine light was on and cant take it in for emissions if the light is on. I get the sensor changed and it did not pop the clutch for a while but now it is popping the clutch again.. I really like the car though. I bought it for $9700 with tax and 44,750 mi. on it. It's a LTZ with leather and a nice stereo to boot. The 3.9 L Burns oil though .

I had the transmission rebuilt for about $4200 on my 2017 Chevrolet 1500. This was at 120000 miles. I had already had ball joints, upper control arms and hubs replaced. I really like my truck and figure I’ll just keep getting it fixed rather than buying a new one. I have looked at newer trucks and they have added a bunch of features to them that I don’t like. So I’m going to keep my 2017. I just need to find some way to keep people from backing into it in the Lowes parking lot and denting it all up.

How often did you change your transmission fluid?

My friend's 2018 Silverado with 125K needed a transmission($6K), oil pump solenoid($2K), and AC condensor($200 - we did it ourselves) this year. He never changed his transmission fluid so maybe that was on him.

Ain't buyin' no "bowtie" unless it's dirt cheap and I can dump it immediately for a profit. Same with GMC (Gummint Motor Corp) or Ford (Found On Road Dead).

I'm pushing tired iron now. An '01 Dodge 1 ton dually.
Blumenthal's in OKC sells Cummins long block for $5K. Will rebuild 6 speed standard for $2500.
For less than $15K, I can have a vehicle that will last another 400K plus miles.....and no car note!

How to replace the transmission in the 2005 Chevy that I had before it hit 120,000. No more Chevys for me.

Wow! Hatred and loyalty run deep in truck owners. How a Ford, Chevy or Ram can be better than the others and stay in business, seems to be a mystery.

I worked 43 years for a sales and delivery company and 90% of our vehicles were Chevy and GM. I personally put over 1.5 million miles on company trucks in those 43 years and I can say that the amount of failure and breakdown on those trucks was nothing more than I would consider normal for the miles and the kind of drivers we had. I got a new truck whenever I had 120,000-150,000 miles on the current truck. GM makes a Good truck and my favorite though, was the Ford Ranger Xtra cab…

And when Toyotas do break down they are very quiet cause they have been bragging them up since they were new. Lots of Toyota and Hondas up on the lift at the shops and they aint all for oil changes. However, I think a Honda car is better built than Chevy... However again, I bought an 04 Malibu for $2500 , with 89,000 on it. Drove it for 85,000 and only had a bearing and one other thing done .. That is every bit as good as a Honda or Toyota.

What was the one other thing, motor and tranny?

Lol, I'm just messing with you. American made vehicles when done right are great vehicles but it's the average that kills them. Toyota and Honda are just better on average in the long run.

Those pickups cannot haul more than 3 tons safely or reliably either. I've had a 02 Tacoma V6 since 05, and putting a one ton load behind it in hills had it screaming to stay 10 mph under the speed limit. It's a good pickup for around town with light loads, but it's not much for hauling. I've had 6T behind my 7.3L F-250 to make it feel the same. They are both pickups, but they are NOT anywhere near the same class.

A half ton domestic is still above the Tundra's capabilities, and I love Toyotas.

My 97 Exploder needed a transfer case and a long block before 200,000. Got another 80k after that. About $6k for the two repairs IIRC.

Knocking on wood right now, I am feeling fortunate that my 2008 Silverado 1500 is still doing fine with the original transmission and engine at 203,000 miles. Hope I didn't jinx myself!

THIS is why I went to Toyota/Lexus in 2000... everyone puts granny's in them at 80-100k no matter the paint schedule or towing.

GM is a pos that I will never buy again.

Not so fast, I have a GMC 2500 with 313,000 mi. on it and never had a problem I dot change the fluid every 50K with a filter and it is an Allison too.

the 2014 silvarado was a truck with widespread transmission problems. i think it took a couples of years, but the problem was supposedly fixed later.
My replacement transmission is supposed to be a "fixed" version and actually an upgrade of what was in it.
