I don't think it's staged. Who in their right mind would volunteer for almost certain permanent ear damage for a staged prank. You know how loud 1 of those bastids would be 2" from your ear?? Didn't see any ear plugs in that dude.
Probably was instant hurt like a son of a gun, which would explain the instant reaction. I could be wrong, but somebody did that to me, it would have me swinging also.

Also, I think the little guy would have been wearing more appropriate shoes if he knew he was going for a swim.
