when you say "trashed back"....................how badly trashed is it?
had PT?
TENS treatments?
nerve deadening shots directly in the spots that are causing problems?
pain med scripts?
nerve ablation?
fusing?
discectomy?
lotta folks reach your age and have "trashed backs" . Some can still work, others not so much.

L5-S1 disc replacement, although that is the best part of my back now. Had the psiatic oblated 4 times I think.
Ladders are taking out my ankles now though.
It isn't energy that kills, its holes.

If you do a lot of parts-and-smarts work with a Fire Alarm or controls contractor you might talk to them and get more into the programming/ commissioning side of things. Much less grunt work, and sort’a fun making the interfacing equipment work, setting up the logic, etc. You’d probably be really good fit for that.

Beats the alternative I suppose. Three of my Carpenter pals from Alaska have passed in the last couple years. Oldest was 54, other two were my age 52.
It isn't energy that kills, its holes.

I thought you were getting fired lol Me too, but I ended up with a few promotions and I still have to work. At least there's no commute. On a serious note though, talking with some old co-workers still in the cath lab, and one is a few years younger than me, early 50's, and just messed up his shoulder bad getting a guy onto the table in the cath lab. I feel like I dodged a huge bullet with 26 years of ER, ICU, and cath lab without mangling my back or shoulders moving 300+ pound patients. Hey man, good on you. No homo but I'm glad it's all worked out for you. My transition from being a turbine welder to doing something completely unrelated was a real wakeup call for me in terms of longevity too.

I went from To Not a career change, but huge job change in regards to wear and tear on my body. Podcaster? Nah, but today I did get to say "sir, you really need to stop talking to me and call 911" and my commute was scary with a cat trying to kill me on the stairs.

My boss is a hunting, fishing, pure blood SOB. I'm in a really good spot and I owe it all to the stupid Minnesota Nurses Association strike in 2016 that lasted 7 weeks and motivated me to leave the hospital I worked at and throw away 17 years of seniority.

You could always open a whorehouse
and run it by hand while you hire help. is that the approved Pennsylvania method?  Little German resourcefulness and ingenuity. We are known for being hands on types. Slummy, Worked with a lady whose husband hurt his back and got disability really young. She had a good job and insurance, his disability allowed them to collect assistance with their kids at home. He bought run down houses, renovated them, then sold or rented them. With his disabled back. One day when they were pushing 60, she was whining around. "Poor Kirby, his back is so bad. Him and the boys cut firewood all weekend, now his back is sore and he is hobbling around." "Yeah, poor 60 year old Kirby. I'm 30 and if I bust my ass cutting firewood all weekend i get sore too!"
