One beautiful spring day I was getting the mail at the end of the drive, and my neighbors were walking by with their dog and very precocious little girl. They stopped and we chatted for a minute. Then I asked about school, now that it was going again. She was happy it was, and I asked, ‘What subject do you like best?’ ‘Math!’ and then asked, ‘What do you want to be when you grow up?’ ‘President! Cause then I could help the homeless and the hungry. I would give them houses and food!’ Her ‘Biden Bumper Sticker’ parents beamed with pride for their ambitious little angel.
I tell the little girl ‘You know you don’t have to wait until your President, you could start right now, this very day!’ She scrunched her face, ‘I could? How?’
‘Well, you could help us clean up the yard, and mow the grass, and trim the bushes. We’ll give you $50.00, and you could give it to the homeless guy down at the stoplight so he can eat and start saving for a house.’
She pondered the proposal for several seconds and then said, ‘Why don’t you hire him to do it and pay him to help you, you could just pay him the $50.00.’
‘Ahh so you want to be a Republican President?’
Her parents don’t even wave to us anymore…
