I've never run into someone that was (at the time anyway) demon possessed to the extent of, say, Regan in "The Exorcist" but I've run into enough that were close that I give credence to those who tell such stories just as I give credence to UFO stories.
There are many levels of demonic influence/possession too. It's not an all/nothing thing. Nor is it necessarily an "all the time" thing either.
The reason I don't generally agree with "once a criminal, always a criminal" is that there is still free will and a person can always choose God. I've met guys who had jailhouse conversions and while they may not be as far down the path as someone who chose God at an early age, they were on the journey.
That said, I also believe in justice and sometimes a person needs remain in punishment for the sake of justice.

Unfortunately, strong religious beliefs do not prevent re-offending. Many in prison consider themself to be strong Christians. Johnny Cash is a popular example.
The above seminar puts much into words, which aligns well with my long held beliefs.
