Ok folks today was one of those strange days. My dad (almost 70) starts sending texts while I’m in a meeting at work, says a guy he used to work with (my dad has been retired for 15 years after 35 years as a DOD fireman) called wanting to sell some guns. I get some mediocre photos of a Remington 700 and a price. Gut told me to go for it, mostly because of what else was there. Typical deal, dad’s buddy, not a gun guy, inherited these guns from a family member collection 10-20 years ago. Dad’s buddies health is now declining and family has no interest wants the guns gone.

So why I agreed to buy it, one because I can afford it and happy to help, but also in the collection was a super clean Winchester 52 with 20x Unertl, which my dad bought and I’m trying to identify in the Winchester forum, a Perazzi shotgun and this 700. I know I have seen this model before. It’s a 24” ADL 7mm rem mag in a very unique camo pattern synthetic stock. Awful photos were good enough I could make out a Zeiss scope in what I think are Talley rings and bases. My initial thought was custom shop gun but I could be wrong. I’m almost certain it’s all factory as it looks unfired and I know I’ve seen this gun before. So how does one identify these older guns? I can email and text photos but haven’t learned how to post them since the photo bucket melt down. Stock almost looks bell and Carlson from photos I found…does this awful description ring any bells for anyone?

Look like this? It’s a Google pic, not mine.
This one is a BDL.

Gunnut308, pretty much just ADL, what is it... mine had open sights but they have been removed and filler screws installed.

I’m really good at misinformation 😃

I believe 1987-1989 for the RS and FS.

RS Rynite Stock
FS Fiberglass Stock
KS Kevlar Stock several years

RS made by DuPont??
FS by Brown Precision
KS by Brown Precision and later McMillan

Could be a custom shop model 700.

Did the custom shop ever do camo stocks? I don’t remember seeing any. There may be some floating around.

Should say Custom Shop on barrel or floorplate........but not always.

Cartridge stamp usually looked hand stamped too......but not always.

Custom shop guns do not have the 'warning' info imprinted on the barrel. Just caliber and proof markings.

Don’t see custom shop anywhere….and it does have the warning label next to the 7 REM Mag. Mom sent better pictures this morning. The camo pattern on the model 7 above looks to be the same.

So guessing it’s a KS…

None of my KS have the warning.

If it has the emblem on the grip cap it is an RS otherwise, it’s an FS.

If it has filler screws from previous sights, no cheek piece, and adl - it should be an FS. It’s not a KS.

👍

RS (Ryanite) was made by Butler Creek.

Was also an AS (Arylon) made by Six Enterprises.

For the KS this started somewhere in the 2006-2008 timeframe - at the absolute tail end of production.

Yup, If it was a KS from that era it would be a ADL and barrel wouldn't have any markings except the date/year code and the caliber and yes they looked like they where hand stamped.

It’s the only option left with what you have described. The RS and AS have a check piece. KS left the building a long time ago.

Any chance you could post those mediocre pictures so we could add them to this thread for future reference?

My email address is in my profile and I would be happy to post pics if you email them to me.

FS is my guess

I think the vast majority were. I have seen one for sale that appeared to be factory that was adl.

The FS was an ADL configuration, while the RS was BDL. From the pics, that is an FS model. Nice rifle.

Final question, any reason I shouldn't get this thing threaded? Like will I be killing some sort of collector value or anything? Don't really need a 7 Mag but have a suppressor in ATF jail that should tame it were it threaded...

7 Mag doesn’t need taming. Its recoil is about like a 30-06. And adding a can would make a 30-32” barrel.

Right .... Sell it and buy a smaller chambering if recoil is an issue.
