Go with another couple who have been there before and rent s car and really see the state. Thats what we did and it was great. We saw Denali, northern lights, glacier cruise, and went on 2 fishing trips in the 2 weeks we were there. We went early September

Glaciers and northern lights are mostly an either/or proposition. T_inman's suggestion is a best bet for a September trip. Keep in mind that our 3 weeks of fall occur in September and it is typically quite rainy. Northern lights viewing is optimistic at best in September.

A Kenai Fjords trip out of Seward in the summer is a good way to view calving glaciers. It looks like they stop their tours near the end of August. You could probably find a charter boat to take you on a personal trip out of Seward, or possibly Whittier later in the season. You could still get a close up view of the glaciers (if boat captain felt comfortable) but less likely to see them calving if not a warm sunny day.

Northern lights are best found during winter months. Interior and northern AK generally produce the best viewing opportunities. However, the most colorful NL I've seen were from Nancy Lake (north of Wasilla) in February.

Whatever you choose to do, enjoy the trip and happy anniversary.

Have fun Higgie.

Bring lots of Rush on your playlist.

Cheap alternative to the cruise ship might be a trip on the Ferry. Lots of short stops in small ports. You might be able to get off in Juneau and spend a day exploring the Mendenhall glacier and other sites near there. Then get back on the Ferry heading to other ports north.

Just enjoy yourself and bring back pics to show us...............or it didn't happen.
