My boss keeps a ledger board for all the big game kilt on the ranch. Up till Sunday, I was the undisputed LR kill champeen with a whitetail from 849 yards. But Sunday, the kid who has worked the last 4 summers for me, putting himself thru engineering school, kicked my everlovin' azz. He's been a good student (both at shooting, and school). I've given him scopes to get started dialling. His hunting rifle was a package rifle savage 243 that he killed a couple deer and antelope with and now wears one of my 4-18 LRHS's. His bergara LR .22 has one of my Arkens, his 204 has an Arken 6-24, and his 17 hummer uses my old 4-12 leupold. His grandpa has bought him all his cheap savage and ruger american rifles up till this past year. Then the kid bought a couple pistols and a pair of Bergara rifles hisself, a .22 and a 6.5 creed, and a burris xtr3 for the creed. I've also got him started reloading his 3 centerfires with my stuff, and he really likes it. He was so wanting the new ranch record, that he didn't score until the last week of our damage season, passing up lottsa does every weekend less than my 850. But it worked out good for him the other day. The wind was way less than saturday, and the goats moved into a pasture that allowed him a longer poke. 952 yards prone from a bipod, but the wind bit him just a little. Spined her just in front of the hips while trying to slip one behind her shoulder, but it all worked out for him. Congats, Cortland. You earned it, kid.....

Congrats to Cortland. 952 yards is a hell of shot. Yes he earned it.
And congrats to you too huntsman22 for taking him under your wing and passing on the knowledge and helping him out with the right gear.

We'll be building his first custom rifle as soon as his AG stock is finished. He chose to go 7PRC for his new hunting rifle. He kinda copied me as far as action/barrel/trigger as he really likes my Bighorns/proofs/ TT Diamonds. Whenever he gets the stock, he'll come up and use my barrel vice and action wrench and screw it together.

Outstanding! That's some great shooting, and apparently you were a very good mentor.
That's more than twice the distance of my longest big game kill.
I do hope he learned a bit about wind drift.
Regards, Guy

That’s a long poke! Creedmoor I’m guessing? It wasn’t clear in the OP what the gear was

Congrats on schooling that fella. Sounds like he has taken right too it! Man, that is great stuff Huntsman.
My little brother did the same thing to me. I spent a few years coaching and showing him how to load and shoot long. Well, turns out he really took it all in and has our little camps longest bull elk kill.
His new PRC sounds like a heckuva great all around rifle.

Hunts my friend, very cool story and a job well done by both of you!! You have the perfect location for teaching young folks all of these important lessons.
I met Cortland only the one time when I stopped by and we all had lunch, however I had a feeling he was a genuine young man. Something this nation needs more of....
Good job Amigo!

That’s a long poke! Creedmoor I’m guessing? It wasn’t clear in the OP what the gear was my bad I guess. I said what gear he owned and showed a pic with a bergara in it and figgered it was plain enuff. sorry, he shot her with his bergara in creed, topped with a burris xtr3. He also used 147 eldm's over 41.5 of H-4350

How long are you going to let him keep the record? I just happened to be the one with the longest biggame kill, being the record holder wasn't my reason for living. I've killed coyotes further than the new record, but they don't count in the hunt book, and my cop buddy killed one at 1740 yards, so I've been beat there, too......

Was TIC - mostly about pushing to go longer. Glad he's got you, the ranch and the space to learn in.
