The problem with the #3 was, one the stock was too short, it was too heavy for some of the cartridges it was chambered too and not heavy enough for the others. The shape of the lever could do a number on your knuckles in the larger calibers. Just so you know I'm not kidding, try shooting a 500 gr. cast bullet from a #3 in 45-70 at 1550 FPS. I guarantee it'll clear your sinuses and do a number on your shoulder. I sold mine off.
I think a lighter weight #1 in the smaller cartridges, say up to maybe 7x57 would be a good thing. I did build up a walkabout #1 in .223 Rem. but it's still close to 8 pounds with a 20" barrel.
The one thing I have never liked about Ruger in general though is you take it their way or nothing. Buy a #1B and ask to have a #1S or #1A forearm put on and their answer is, "NO WAY!"

My #3 was a 45/70. It came with brass, bullets and a can of 4064. I set forth with my usual load for a 1895 Marlin, 400gr sp @1800 fps, using a mid chgarge of good 'ol 4064. I fired it one shot. After I was sure I was all right, my friend had a go. Same routine, one shot. I sold it with the 18 remaining handloads, it circulated through several shooters, resold several times, usually with just one or two cartridges fired before being re-sold to the next curious... victim. It was a friendlier time and the little click of gunshowers in Salt Lake City all in time knew of the little odd rifle with the big story behind it! Bill

Paul,

Unfortnately, you hit the nail squarely on the head!

As far as a mini #1 goes, You can bet it's NOT going to happen. There are at least 50 folks on this board that would buy one, but it would not matter if there were 100. Manufacturer's like the corporate Big Wigs at Ruger think in terms of 1000's, not 100's. Not only would engineering costs be high, but tooling costs would be atrosious. It would take years to realize a profit on that investment, if ever. So folks, guess what? It just ain't a-gonna happen. frown

A sad situation, indeed but there it is!

Yep, I will certainly never see it.

A 3/4 size #1 or a left hand 77/22 will probably never see the light of day....they make entirely too much sense and would sell like crazy.
