The Tactical Response Pistol: I bought this when they were a special order item still, at Springfield Armory, back in the 1990s. I carried it for years, in a Milt Sparks Versa Max II. Not sure how to characterize it. Is it a standard catalog item or a semi-custom. I think back then it was a semi-custom offering, inferior to a Les Baer, but superior to standard offerings at Springfield. Whatever it is, it has some really nice features, and they assured me it was factory tuned, which explains the exceptional trigger and smooth action, and in all these years, not a single failure (apart from a dud round, which had nothing to do with the gun). It's got their Armory Kote finish, which is really quite tough. Like I said, I carried it for years, and shot it quite a lot back then, and it still looks about new. Here are a couple of ten yard, off hand, groups, I shot with it today.

Dirt, you might want to blur out the serial number, unless you're one of those folks who just doesn't care.

It came with Novak style (made by Novak??) night sights, but the Tritium is about 98% dead now. In pitch blackness, if you hold it right up to your eyes, you can see them. I really should have some new night sights installed on it.

Nice gun. Needs a rail for a light. Agreed. I was just thinking the same thing while shooting it today. Back then, it wasn't a common feature.

I think back then it was a semi-custom offering, inferior to a Les Baer, but superior to standard offerings at Springfield. The Springfield Professional was a high-end Custom Shop pistol. The TRP was modeled after the Professional and 'more affordable'. It's a great pistol and I'd choose it over any Les Baer.

Too weak in relation to size and weight. I would rather lug around S&W 29 or S&W 629 with 3" or 4" barrel. If it is big and heavy it must be powerful.

They also load .44 Special for weaklings and those afraid of recoil. There is backpacking trail five-shot version called Model 69.

Those from Performance Center tend to have very good SA & DA trigger pulls and there is no safety to worry about. You still want extremely outdated 1911?

I work with guy that has one of the original TRP's. New in the case and unfired. he will not sell it. I have handled it and it is indeed a very nice 1911. Wasn't FBI HRT using them when they first came out? Or was it another custom 1911?

I believe the TRP was out before then, though. I ordered my TRP before I read a single article on the FBI ordering up custom 1911s from Springfield Armory, and I devoured gun literature and gun news back then. I believe I started the ball rolling by phone with the Springfield Armory Custom Shop on my TRP in late 1997. The person I spoke to made no mention of an FBI contract to make custom 1911s along the same or similar lines, which you'd think would be natural for them to make mention of.

Now they use MOS version of this or G17 MOS: Marine Recon units also dumped 1911 rail gun in favor of Glock.
