Besides shooting a couple of 338 Lapua's and one 388 Lapua AI at steel a few times in the past, the only time I hunted with one was in New Zealand, using the 265 grain LRAB. The one shot worked really good at 624 yards. The one I shot then was a Remington 700 that had a different barrel and stock, and they had added a muzzle brake.

My buddy has a savage 338 Lapua. It came with the big tank like muzzle break. Surprised I could shoot that thing all day long. It's been a while.... like 5 years since we shot it, but if I remember correctly. It Kicked less than my 6.5.
Too bad he had a POS scope on it. He was pretty embarrassed about it and I haven't shot it since. But it felt like anything less than 400 yards was simply wasting ammo.

All of them do something better than the 30-06, but none of them do everything as well.

I’m just on the 3rd barrel of my Savage 338 lapua. Not one issue in 10 or more years. No complaints other than first barrel pointed 6” high at 100 yards with the scope maxed out. Had to take the rail off.

Most don't have enough twist to make the good bullets work.
Mine is 1:9, i would have preferred 1:8.
