We don't see a lot of model 7's down here but ive started searching for an early 223 walnut model

I would like to know what s/n area I should look what years were considered the best.

I believe they went from 18 1/2" to 20" barrels

I am after walnut blued but could live with stainless

Was there a change in twist rates?

Appreciate any tips to narrow down the search

Thanks
John

There are several different Remington 7 variations with different barrel lengths and contours.

The early blued CM and walnut 7s had 18.5" barrels and, I think, a 1-12" ROT when chambered in 223. The early 7s only had 1 factory d&t scope mounting hole in the receiver bridge, so you either need to use a 1-piece base or have your 'smith d&t a second hole in the receiver bridge for 2-piece base options. When Remington started to d&t a second hole in the receiver bridge to the rear of the initial hole placement they put it very close to the initial hole such that it requires a base with that specific hole space which is not the same as the spacing of the holes in the receiver bridge on the 700/721/722/725 series rifles.

The only Remington 7 that I have in 223 has a 20" stainless barreled action and is installed in a Custom Shop laminated Mannlicher style stock.

Not early but the model 7 predator came in 223. They are camo. 1/9 if not mistaken.

The first ones made were 1-12 ROT, later versions were 1-9. I have one that's a 1-12 and it is very accurate with bullets in the 40-55 grain range. I had a later one in 1-9 that I sold to a member on here. It also was a good shooter, and I really couldn't tell any difference in the two rates of twist with the bullets I was shooting.

I have a 223 Model 7 stainless that's a 1-9 ROT and I've shot bullet weights up to 64 grains, and it's a good shooter as well. Personally, the ROT's in a 223 don't really bother me, as I don't shoot bullets heavier than 64 grains in my bolt rifles.

The most collectible version is the first few years of production. The bolt know will be smooth not knurled. The bottom metal is steel and a magnet will stick to it. The later ones have a aluminum or pot metal trigger guard/bottom metal. It will have the 1/12 twist and the 18" barrel with sights.

I walk around like I'm ok, but deep down inside, I wanna buy another gun.
