One of my hunting buddies paid big time for a calf salvage. His wife insisted they adopt a neighboring steer calf suffering a damaged ankle after being stepped on. Free! Just pick it up. They had a dozen acres and kept a couple pack horses too, so space was available. Mofo grew to about 1,500 lbs and at midlife became part of the divorce settlement. Mofo was to live out his natural life, could not be sold, or butchered. He was so tame one could not herd him around or drive him into a stock trailer. Had to bait him into a trailer for a move with alfalfa as an attractant after a day without groceries. Damn thing lived to 18, and it cost him $500 for a backhoe and driver to come out and bury the beast.

If the calf died or was put down, just remain silent. Any response might ruin one's political career.

That calf disappeared on the third day.

We tubed it with milk replacer for two days and then it was gone. It was a 120lb calf right on the edge of our feeding grounds and I've seen exactly one coyote in the last month and I don't they they got it so it remains a mystery.

That herd is calving in an area around 150 acres. Short grass but lots of downed trees and I've literally spent 3-4 hours walking around looking in places where we can't drive.

Zero sign.

It's really been bothering me that I haven't found it.

Assuming it died but zero magpies, or smell or scraps anywhere. Cow is just hanging out like normal, usually they will stay with a dead calf for a day or two.

Angus, that's what my dad was speculating but I'd be shocked if a cat choose that big luggy calf to drag up a tree.

That and we very rarely have mountain lions in the area.

Sam;
Evening my friend, I hope all else is going better than the missing calf.

That's a strange one indeed that there's no sign of it.

Weird about the cow too.

Again I hope all else goes better for you all with this year's calf crop.

A big calf really is nothing for a male to drag up in those cotton woods, they drag those big does y’all have into them. Or into a cave.

That is strange. You would think the cow would be bellering if the calf was lost.
