I carry a ruger American 22 mag in my truck every day. No complaints. Had it a long time.

I have had several.. One of the most accurate was a bolt action tube fed Marlin. Outstanding accuracy. I traded it for a Marlin 94 22 mag. big mistake. My current ones are a CZ light barrel and a Win. 94/22 mag. Both excellent shooters. But I think the old bolt action Marlin might have been the best.

For a utility piece, SS is hard to beat.

I wouldn't buy a 22 mag except the Magnum Research semi-auto. Price be damned.

Of your two choices, I’d take the Marlin cause I suspect it would be more accurate than the Ruger.

Magnum research in 22-mag gets my vote. In handgun AMT auto mag. nothing else comes close.

Especially when comparing it to a Bergara B14 and the like.

Rather spend more and get a rifle that shoots and looks good.
Never cared for the looks of the Mossberg stuff.

My CZ457 does just fine.

I think they have a used 22LR version of that on the shelf and will check. I've heard good things about them.

My best 22lr rifle is a western field (mongomery wards) Mossberg single shot I paid $25 and it hangs in there with my expensive 22's.

I've been looking at one of them for $599, but the lower cost alternatives make it more appealing for the farm truck or ATV.

The cz would compliment my 452 well... tempting.
ordered my CZ from an online seller (a first for me), $496 + $15? ship IIRC... guy even sent me pics of the wood so i knew what i was getting... even after the $30 FFL Transfer fee i saved $75+ over buying local, better wood too!...

Thats something to think about.

Since my .22 mag is an occasional varmint popper, proly shoulda done a TC Contender rifle.
Hopefully the new TC stuff will be reasonable in price.

When people post something like that, readers will often wonder why the poster thinks that way. It adds value to the post.

I had three of the Mossbergs, a 640K and two 740's {birch stocked version}. None shot as good as my Marlin. The Mossbergs action resists easy mounting of most scopes.

I wish somebody would make a .22 Mag. like a Kimber Montana or a Rifles,Inc. Ultralight, with an 18" barrel around 4lbs.

If they could get the price low enough they should sell really well.

I’d buy one.

Mossbergs have always shot great for myself and my club members in Washington state. Not related to your question in the OP, but the iron sighted Mossberg 144's shoot amazingly well. Those that have been around them, probably know what I'm talking about.

As for the comments about scope mounting. I've never had an issue with mounting a scope on the 640KD (shown above). That rifle wears irons right now, because I used it in some of my clubs hunting rifle matches. That one does exceptionally well with a scope, but only marginally well with its irons. It's not a Winchester model 52, by any stretch of the imagination. But it does great in my clubs iron sight hunting rifle matches, where we shoot in various field positions.

Out of the 2 rifles you asked about, I'd still lean toward the Ruger RAR. I've had one, and 2 of my buddies had to go out and get themselves one, after shooting mine. One buddy uses his religiously on his coyote hunting trips. It works great for him. Good luck with whatever you decide!!
