I have been offered a real nice (90%)(bore near perfect) Model 29 with the octagon barrel. My references simply advise that it is prewar. The serial number is 1125XX. What year was this rifle manufactured? This gun has a short base Lyman tang sight, was the tang drilled on these guns or has it been altered after leaving the factory? Price is about $200 canadian.

My reference says that the bbls were octagon prewar and round later. Prewar shows a checked pistol grip and plain later. Someone else must tell you age. However the reference shows open sights.

Bill,
The serial indicates that the 29 would be the first version with the grooved forearm. The early version seems to be a lot easier to find that the later pre-war with checkered wood and do not command the higher price. The tang sight should be correct as the tang was D&T'ed for a short base sight. Spacing is 1 1/8" C to C. I think the 1903/1909/1914/1925/1929 all used the same sight even though it is not listed that way in the Old Gunsights book.
The sight should bring about half of the price, so at $200 C I think you are looking at a good buy.

Rick I was offered another Model 29. This one was octagon as well, 36XXX range, checkered pistol grip and checkered forearm, condition overall about 70%. Price with tax around $225. The barrel was marked 29A. Does this seem to be correct? Is there a good reference for the Savage pump 22s? Bill Rantz

Rick, For info only, I picked up a nice 29 at Tulsa Serial # 53xx, non checkered stock, ringed forearm. About 80-85%, perfect bore.

Pact,
Sounds like you got a nice early one. If I'd know you were going to be there we could of meet. May be next time.

Bill,
Originaly I thought that the 29A was not produced till after WWII but I know of others with the octagon barrel and in the serial range you are looking at. There is a good chance these are pre-war and very hard to find. I don't know if there are records on these as I think Savage stopped recording serials by the time yours was produced. I wonder if this 5 digit serial range started with the 29A's. To bad it doesn't have more condition. I would buy it because I need one.
I don't know of any reference material on Savage .22's other than what we generate here on the Forum.

I took a second look at this Model 29. It has 29A stamped on the octagon barrel and on the receiver. The serial # is actually #31XXX and it is stamped at bottom front of receiver and on the lower tang. The buttstock is marked with the serial number as well. The barrel is probably 80% blue and the receiver is greyish/brown. Wood is vg (solid/checking clean) but the right side piece has shifted a 32nd of an inch or so outwards leaving a very small space between wood and receiver. Haven't bought as tax and registration fee will put it at about $232 canadian and i have a rack of nice 22 bolt actions which I can't find any buyers for due to our assinine gunlaws in Canada.

Bill,
Thanks for the followup. I've add the info to the little bit of data that I have.
What is the tax and transfer cost in Canada now?

Total sales Tax in Ontario is 15% of selling price. The transfer fee for "registration" purposes is another $25/gun. Bill R

That's about what you pay to buy one at an auction here (buyers premium and FFL transfer for a non dealer).
