duckbofetch,
Is this your first dance? If so, your guide should have a pretty detailed list. I don't always bring what they suggest, but you may be hearing about it the whole trip if you don't!!!! For instance, the first time shale rips up your Patagonia Puffball layer of insulation, and the guide asks you where is the heavy wool chit they suggested.......well, you see where I'm going. That aside, this is so much fun, the preparation for the "Big Trip". It's as foreign to me as a moonshot, as I've always lived in the SE US. I've never hunted the Chugatch, but I've been to AK several times, hunting the Brooks, the AK Range, and the Misty Fjord NF. Any weather is possible. You'll find that members on this forum can endlessly debate boots, packs, tents, flashlights, waders, guide tips, taxidermy, socks, and on and on. For the most part, guys on this forum know their stuff, and have helped me to no end. I'll try to look up some published lists that have been helpful to me, and link you to them.

I have made five such (walk in) trips with a 38.5" and a 37" to show for the effort. Sit down with your partner and have a serious discussion about every piece of gear. We take one rifle between us and hunt together saving 6.5 lbs right there. The tent is not needed, we took one the first time out and could not justify one after that (we camp on top in a rock outcropping with a lightweight tarp-fly). We make water as we go and have a collapable fabric canteen for camp use. We plan for four days carring in about 28 lbs. I did take a "new" guy in once but we got high winds snow and a crust of ice covering everything and my partner pulled the plug before the fog lifted and the hunt could begin... I feel we walked away from his sheep.
We have taken our modified sheep camp out for Caribou and last time out (adding a tent) for Moose, we like to make those Cub Drivers happy with our little pile of camp gear! Best of luck to you.

I definitely understand the motivation to go light, and I've been up the mountain a time or two, and for me a tent, soft pad, dependable sleeping bag, and my own rifle make the trip worth it. If this Kifaru sleeping bag works out, I've just reduced my base carrying weight by one pound. I'm thinking about going with lighter glass also.
I'd just be a little afraid to head out with only a tarp, but have respect for those that can.

Attached is my sanitized sheep/goat hunting list embedded in the .zip folder. While I would never carry everything on the list, I could imagine a situation when I would want each item, so the list acts as a "reminder" tool for me when packing.

Note: I left the tent on the spreadsheet as an example of how the file works if anyone is interested in using this as a template.

Congrats on the Chugach tag...which one did you draw?

Alaskacub,

Could you copy your friends SS to this post? Sounds very interesting.

Teesh and all:

Contained within the attached zipped folder are the sheep lists referred to by AlaskaCub from the Outdoors Directory Forum. Also included is a simple list from a friend of mine who has been successfully hunting sheep in the Chugach longer than I have been alive.

As for those who cannot display the list, I have nothing useful to offer. So long as you have any "recent" version of windows or Mac OS you should be able to unzip and view these .doc and .xls files.

Here's that post and my spreadsheet:

I created a spreadsheet. Got ahold of a digital scale and weighed all my gear, every single item including bullets, socks and skivvies! Then set up a calculation so that if I enter "yes" it adds the item to the total weight. My spreadsheet has more items than I will take on any one hunt. I can pick and choose what items to take and see exactly how much my pack will weigh. This is gear only. Food would be in addition and of course depend on how many days worth. Figure 1.5lbs per day as an average. Between my water bottles and bladder I can carry a gallon of water if I feel I have too. 8lbs right there.

You would be surprised at the actual weight of your gear compared to the manufacturers listed weight or your own "guesstimate". And all those items that "don't weigh much" add up to a pound or two in a hurry. And remember. A pound or so is a another days worth of food which means another day you can stay in the mountains and look for that ram! Or survive the unexpected.

I attached it my spreadsheet. You can see my gear and replace it with your own and the weights. This has helped my put it in to perspective.
