Was going stir crazy so I headed for my squirrel hot spot. Mind you there was a snow storm the day before but that shoudnt matter right? I know I know like I said, i was goin stir crazy.

After sidehilling my way into the rimrocks an jumping deer in every draw I spotted some brown that looked out of place. binoculars revealed a diggersquirrel pressed against a rock soaking up what lil heat there was in the 35 degree weather.
To long of a shot for the shot that was presented . needless to say he went under before I could get a better shot.

Spent the day on the rocks an made a day out of it. saw enough bobcat tracks up there that I think calling might be productive as well.

still a good day though

You are even crazier about this squirrel shooting than I am.. and THAT is saying a lot! Swallow two varmint grenades and go back into hibernation for a few weeks! See ya soon perhaps.

thanks guys.

Couldnt poke around to much as those rocks an be risky without the ice and snow. Just not worth it.

I cant wait for the squirrels to surface for the summer.
The ridges hold back the sunshine until around 10am. Gives a guy plenty of time to get into place before they come up. When the sun hits the rocks They start coming out.

After shooting for a few mins I like to target the "tattle-tales". Then when that gets a lil old I start playing with the distance and the wind with my 17hmr.

I also hunt deer up there so I am leery of shooting very much centerfire up there

Bogger,

I was up there the other day and saw about 100 squirrels... I only shot about 50 so as to save some for you, when you head up that way again...

Went into another draw and there was squirrels all over the place...

you must not be looking hard enough...

you handled that April Fool's Joke with flying colors!

hopefully they will be out in a few weeks over in Klamath.. when I head over that way, I'll contact you ahead of time and see if you have time to go over..

we may go out to Lakeview instead this year and do some overnighters if the populations are down in Klamath... but with the price of fuel, we are thinking of overnighters and taking the sleeping bags with us..

Thought so. Another question, what're you doing with all of that rope? Or is it more like cord? Can't tell from the picture.

I've lowered a rifle an pack down a rock face more than once with the rope. Makes it a lil easier to decend in some places if you dont have the pack or rifle hanging you up.

Yeah hunting around here isn't like being in Kansas, that is for sure..in the back country, I also carry a 50 ft rope of 3/8 inch diameter...lots of uses for it...

at the right time, here in backcountry Oregon, it can be worth its weight in gold!
