I'm working up some .270 loads using 130 grainers (whitetail/hogs). I have the Campfire favorites (RL 22,19, H4831sc, IMR 4350), but I also have N165 and N550. Seems like either one would be applicable, and I've found VV powders to be excellent in all respects. Anybody out there with practical experience with these powders in the .270?

I can't see why N165 wouldn't work quite well in the 270 Winchester. They seem to shoot great with any powder from the 4350's to RL-22 burn rate and N-165 would fit in there somewhere. I think that you would be able to get a 270 winchester to shoot superbly well with a powder that's less expensive than N-165 but other than costing more I can't see any reason not to try N-165 in a 270..........................DJ

Yeah, I already own those powders, and use them for other rifles, so the money is already spent. I would ultimately like to get down to just two or three powders. Just looking for a starting point, or someone who has worked up some loads with those powders...

I'm sold on RL-22 in the 270 Winchester. I shoot 140gr Accubonds in my Beretta Mato, here's a 200yd group:

Both rifles typically shoot bugholes at 100yds using RL-22................................DJ

Is RL22 temperature sensitive? Im from 40degrees for deer to 100+ when hunting pigs. Im leaning towards Ramshot Hunter for now.

From his test and my own personal experience I don't believe that the newer lots of RL-22 are as temperature sensitive as some claim. I noticed that an earlier lot of RL-22 we were shooting gave a little higher velocity and I'm wondering if they made a change that made velocities more consistant.
It's hard to find -40deg days in Okiehoma so more testing might show different results but Prdator's tests were about as good as we could acheive for the moment.
I've found RL-22 to be one of the most accurate easy to load powders I've ever worked with and plan to shoot a lot more of it (I bought 4 more kegs of the lot Prdator was shooting). I think you might be leaving something on the table if you don't at least try it...................................DJ

I've used R-19 on several different .270s. In two cases, R-19 produced the best accuracy out of all powders* tested (and with zero pressure signs at the top end). Maybe 100 fps slower than R22, but I never went over Alliant's max load. Probably some room to carefully work up?

I use N550 for one of my favourite loads for my beloved .270 Win.:
130 grs. Nosler Partition, 55,8 grs. N550, Fed. GM 210 M, OAL = 3,28", Vel. = 3130 fps., accuracy is 0,59"(5 shots).

Never had any pressure signs in my rifle (Steyr PH)but start lower and work up.

I started at 55 grains with the NP as well. Now all I need is a break so I can get in some range time........
I'll post the results when I get 'em.

Sam, I've not tried RL-19 in the 270 Winchester. I used IMR-4831 for quite a while until I tried RL-22. So far I haven't gotten top velocities with RL-19 in the rounds I've tried it in.......................DJ
