"Power"-wise, the biggest I've killed deer with is the .358 Norma Magnum; Caliber-wise, 9.3x62 & .45/70. Have carried a .411 KDF Magnum in the deer woods but haven't had a chance to shoot one with it. Did shoot a bobcat with the .411 though, not pretty! Exit was the size of a football, in other words everything from just behind the front shoulder to just in front of the back hip. Believe it or not though, I had it mounted using the hide from another cat as a "patch". That side goes towards the wall....

No, I'm not a Ruger bigot - just an unabashed fan of their revolvers, M77's and #1's.

I got a few with my old jeep. That bumper was hell for stout an aside from some flesh stuck in the fairlead, there wasnt much damage. I put a band-aid on the damage an called it good Other than that 54cal muzzleloader an 30-06 have been the biggest I have gotten deer with.

Like so many folks either a .338 or a 12 gauge slug. A .35 Whelen if you consider that bigger than the .338.
Noslers and Bearclaws don't do much. I did use a Hornady on the last one and probably wouldn't do that again as it hit a bone.

.450 Marlin. Incerdible. In the mountians of N.C. you don't want them to go far. A lot of guys use .45-70 and .444 Marlin as well. If they run into a hollar you can have one hell of a drag out!! Buckshot to the head and neck works well to.

405gr Beartooth hardcast.
Some call it overkill, I like the great blood trail, the ability to eat just about to the hole, and the way it simply hammers little alabama bucks!

I've killed two with a Z71,does that count?
It hits em just as hard as my 35 whelen,or a 300 Ultra for that matter. Either way, dead right there, right now.

From pure ft-lbs standpoint .338 Win Mag and 200 gr Nosler B-TIP at over 3000 fps. Interestingly enough the second farthest I have seen a lung shot deer run when hit with a centerfire was with this combo (>150 yards).

You don't have to run that .340 full-throttle. Load some 225-250 gr Hornady Interlock bullets to 2600-2700 fps. It will work just fine.
I shot two deer-sized blesbok (+/- 175 lbs) with 400 gr Woodleigh Weldcores from my .404 Jeffery. Through the shoulders...DRT.

10-4! Over the years, this has been my biggest deer getter by far, both in size of getter and number of deer per year. Other than that, a .50 muzzle loader. http://www.peterbilt.nb.ca/379truklrg.gif

175mm....Republic of South Vietnam. They do alot of damage with shoulder shots, so we used to hit close to them and let some random piece of the surrounding countryside do the actual killing. They were great cooked on a spit over a fire; after you retrieve them with a Huey, with Cobras flying overhead security...

I can only immagine what a direct hit would do.
Saw first hand a fully grown camel hit with an RPG once..... Chunder, smoldering chunder.
Something clever here.

Putting tape over the muzzle was a bisch... I know that.... where do I know that from? A story, it's cloudy in my mind, a fun read.... I know that... I know of a story that contains these ... these flavors, what is it? Help me out.

Dennis I'm new to the cartridge but I wasn't aware this case could be safely loaded down that far. Know where I could find the data on such loads? Having a good mild (relatively speaking of course) could be a useful thing if it could be made to shoot accurately.
If there's one thing I've become certain of it's that there's too much certainty in the world.

I used a 375 HNH on a PA whitetail about 10 years ago, no problem.

Bloodied my .458 Lott on an Axis doe! Oh my...was there anything left? Fords are racking up a serious count in the non-rifle category. Oh, a question off the orginal idea. When I do go afield looking for deer with the .340 what would be the best bullet? Obviously there'd be no need for the heavier bullets available but wouldn't the 180-210gr pills go off like C4 at 340 velocities except at extended ranges? I mean, I'd like to have at least a little bit left for chili. 225 TSX a good balance? Something else? For years I used Barnes 175 gr which are no longer available, so am working up loads with the 185 tsx. That is 338 win mag but only 200 ft/sec slower. On deer the bullets punch through unless shoulder bones or neck are hit. Behind the shoulder id importandt and 1/3 up. Randy
