does the 6.8 SPC conversion require special mags to function OK, or can I use standard M16 mags?

Yes they require different mags to function right. A standard mag will work but you have to download them or the mag begins to swell.
PRI 6.8 mags are probably the best bet.

PRI mags in my 6.8 wildcat are badazz mags...

+2 for PRIs Cmag also has 6.8 mags available, no experience with them though. I believe they are aluminum whereas the PRIs are steel.

You cannot use standard USGI mags. While this was a selling point early on, it is a bit more than just swapping out a follower.
