Went to the range last weekend and shot a couple of different loads I've been working on. Using nosler 130gr BT with RL 19 and RL22. In the second target I might have pulled a little but I'll get back out there soon and make sure. Out of these two loads what would you pick to shoot. Notice the different speeds of the two loads.

Of the 2 loads and if for sure you might have pulled the shot (I would shoot more of course) I would have to choose the second load, once again if and only if you knew you pulled the shot and could verify with more groups.

The second one, no doubt about it ;); I would just shoot again and not worry about the shot that is "out". Better yet, get out to long range and shoot it and don't worry.

Even if I didn't pull it its still under 1" and moving 340fps faster. I think more range work needs to be done!

I'd be a little concerned about pressure of the 2nd load. I'm a big 270WSM fan (have 3 now, had 2 others), but that's faster than anything I've seen for a 130 (published or personally) -3200-3300fps seems about tops to me.

TXRAM: That IS a good point;went right over my head.. what you said is about what I have gotten from the cartridge too.Might have to back off but the rifle seems accurate with anything.

Yeah it's hot, a 130 should run 3300. Back it off to 3300 and go kill the crap out of stuff.

Nosler's 130 gr max load of RL 22 is 65gr for 3396 FPS with a 24" barrel. With many cartridges Nosler data runs 100+ faster than most other places even with reduced charges. For other references, Alliant and Speer data shows 66gr with 130 speer givin 3228 fps; Swift shows 67 gr for 3278 fps; Barnes shows 67.5 for 3235 fps. In any case, you are inline with Nosler data.

Max loads in my Tikka T3 270WSM run around 3336 with 130 grain Hornady SP's and at 3256 with 130 grain TSX's.
If your rifle happens to have a fast barrel like the one used in the Nosler ballistics lab then 3396 is feasible but only just barely IMO.
What kind of SD are you seeing with those loads?

I changed out to CCI magnum primers and my RL22 load shrank to .481" 3 shot group. I think I'm leaving it at that!

The first one is very tempting but you are shooting a 270WSM and those velocities are very close to a plain 270.

If you don't care about that then I'd pick the first one and call it doen but otherwise you need to test some more.

What powder and how much were you using?????I cannot get near those velocities with my Tikka T-3 Lite.

Try about 63.5 grains of H4831sc with a GM215M and call it good!

My grouping got tighter with the hotter, faster load than the first pic. At almost 3400 fps is kickin a regular 270 A$$

You may want to back off, just in case your approaching high pressures. What was the temperature the day you shot them? I know Texas never really cools off but, the pressure will probably go down some come fall and *ahem* "winter". As far as which group? Unless you plan on shooting 321.58 yards or more who cares? smile

Only thing I might be worried about with the second is an impact inside 100 yards or so with a Ballistic Tip moving about 3300fps, as Nosler lists the suggested max impact velocity for the Ballistic Tips as 3000fps. In that case, maybe the first group is best, or try out a 140gr Accubond or 130(?) Scirocco, or whatever.

MagPro powder in both cases.
74 grains behind the TSX and 75 behind the Hornady. Loads were taken right from the Accurate powder website.
I was using Winchester LR primers but will also try LRM primers.
My SD for both loads is too high for my liking though, 29 with the Hornady and 24 with the TSX. Both were just under MOA at 200 yards though.

max distance for shooting game here on this ranch is more than anyone cn shot! Its common her to pratice 300-500 yards. South texas is pretty flat and no big trees to be found! Plus I'm in a 20ft high shooting box.

I would back the R22 load down a little and work the R19 load up to about 66grn. Both should give you around 3300fps. Both powders appear to be capable of grouping in your rifle. With shots over 300yds, a load with low ES and SD will benefit you more than that last 150fps ever will.

My rifle happens to like Magpro and the 140gr Accubond. I chose it over the 130's because I am actually gaining by using the heavier, higher B.C bullet at the same relative velocity as the 130's. The load I shoot is 72.5gr and averages 3260fps with a nice low SD.
