Does anyone have actual experience with a 270 Ackley in a 22" bbl.?

A fella that posts 'round here occasionally by the handle of colmacivor is your guy to ask (and maybe Nathanial, though I don't know if Nathanial actually tried the one he bought from me, or if he built another).
FWIW, it'd likely be between and just about up to (though likely not quite as fast as) a .270WSM. Just a SWAG.....

If I were to chose to do a 270 AI I would just buy a 280 AI as Nosler has brass, the shoulder is moved forward already and the bullet diameter difference is negligible.

supercrewd..nice idea but the Kreiger .277 barrel and the thousands of .277 bullets I have would not work too well with the 280

If the pressures in both cartridges ramain about the same, you won't see hardly any gain. The 270 didn't respond too well to the AI and that was right from Ackley's own lips.

The .270 AI will in reality at safe pressure be about 125-150 fps slower than the .270WSM or 50-75 fps faster than the vanilla version.

The AI's I had done in rimmed, rimless and belted rounds turned out to be nothing but a hobby extension. Overall they complicate things and are a waste of time and money.
I had a Sears M51 (High Standard made 30-06 on the FN action) barrel set back to 30-06 AI. It works ok but now I don't even use the rifle and I would have to look for ammo. It must be here somewhere!
The 30-06 worked superb. Suppose the AI works too.
Now I can understand the want to have something new. I did it and you should be able to also if you want to. The suggestion of Nosler 280 AI might be an idea.

Help me here. What difference in 270 and 280 Ackley? I know the shoulder is a smidge forward in the 280 but?????
My thought is > on 30-06 cases >the smaller the bore the greater the gain as there is more shoulder to blow out. In theory the 25-06 Ackley out to be the biggest improvement. It's the only one I will/might try someday.

Daveh and Planemech...the sickness, once you really have it, never goes away, only into temporary remission. I had a 375-06 AI. Now there was something that was a lot of work. I had it for about 3 weeks before it became something else. My mauser 280 AI lasted 4 weeks. Despite all the success I have had with the standard 270, 280, and 7mm Rem Mag I still have the urge to fxxx around with something else. Go figure because I sure can't. Idea abandoned!

150 TSX's go at 2950 with 59 grains of H4831sc 130 Accubond's at 3210 with 61 grains of H4831sc Both loads shot over my Oehler. 60 grains of can be got into the case with the 150's but with a fair amount of compressing. 59 grains is the accurate load in my rifle so that is where I keep it. The Nosler 280 AI brass works very well.

About the only custom chamber I get to wondering about is the Gibbs line. The neck on a Ackley version is still way longer than necessary. If your really going to get 100% out of a case of this diameter I think you need to shorten the neck to about .300".

The 280 Remington is overbore.
The 7 Rem Mag is over bore.

How about a 270-08 AI for something a little less generic...

I have decided that if I want the next step up from a std 270 Win that I will get the 7mm Rem Mag and really get an increase. Thanks for the input guys.
