How much difference would there be between a 30-06 ackley with 26 inch barrel vs. a 300 win mag with a 24 inch barrel with both guns shooting 180 grain accubonds?

My 30-06 with a 26 3/4" barrel get slightly under 2900 FPS with 57.5 grains of H-4350 and a 180 AccuBond or TSX. my 300 will do nearly 3100 FPS

I'd be for expecting 2900 or a tish more out of an 06 AI with a 26" tube and with the 24" 300 winnie somewhere between 3K and 3100.

Not enough for game to notice the difference if velocity is your only real question...

the Ackley is strictly a handloading proposition, so a good handloader, could probably equal or come pretty close to factory 300 Mag ammo, unless it is like Hornady's Magnum ammo..

a handloaded 06 with H4831SC... can be loaded to 2900 fps, with a 180 grain bullet.. with safe pressures..

an AI could add 100 fps to that easily.. if nothing else that is about 2 clicks on the scope, and it will equal the trajectory of factory 300 Mag, 180 gr ammo...

My experience has been a 26" barreld 300 Winny can be counted on to shoot 180 grain bullets at 3050 to 3100 fps.

My 300wsm likes a load that basicly makes it a 30-06 AI....

My 300 wsm is everything I wish my -06 could be.

I have a custom Mod 98 Mauser done in the early 1960s-30-06 Ack Improved. This rifle has a 24 in barrel and is very accurate.
It appears to get about 100 fps faster than one of my pre-64 M-70 rifles in 30-06. This Mauser has been shooting original 225 gr Barnes semi-spitzers,
220 gr Nosler Partitions, and 210 gr SPBT bullets.
It will keep up with a 300 H&H, but that Holland Super 30 can be handloaded to equal the 300 WM, but not the Weatherby 300.

My heavy bullet loads are designed to approximate the 318 Westly Richards Nitro Express rimless. The 318 WR will push 250 gr bullets to almost 2500 fps.
I can do that in this Mauser with 220-225 gr bullets. The 220 gr Nosler is superior to the bullets used 75-80 yrs ago loaded by Kynoch for W-R.

So, the 30-06 AI works with heavy bullets and powders like H-4831 and IMR 4350, or even H 870. The 30-06 AI performs
individually, depending on the individual rifle. Mine is accurate, gives extra velocity, and reaches the goals set for it.
It gives up very little within 150 yds to the 300 magnums, and uses less powder-while requiring less case trimming. It is quite a custom 98 rifle.

The 300 Win mag won’t kill an animal any deader at practical ranges.

My .30 Gibbs shot 180 grain Partitions out of the muzzle at just under 3000 fps, about the same as many .300 Win's do.

It didn't kill any elk any deader than my .300 Wby or a .300 Win would, but the Gibbs cases sure looked a lot cooler than the standard .30-06 cases do.

The .30-06 AI really shines with heavy bullets. Most velocity gains with 200gr or heavier.

You get 5 in the magazine versus 3 for a magnum. Still have a long shoulder compared to the Gibbs or .300win mag.

Nosler and Barnes had load info in the editions I have.

The AI case is great for longterm brass stability.

More versatility with the 06 case than the .300wm if you want light loads.

If you’re getting enough extra velocity to make a difference from 30-06 to 30-06AI, you’re increasing the pressure.
The 30-06 loads in manuals are safe in older 30-06’s and rifles such as the 1895 Winchester. Load it to the same pressure as the 270 and you have nearly the velocity as you will with the AI.

I prefer classic.
