I have an 1894 Cowboy and I would like to refinish its stock.

But I cannot figure out how to remove the forend. I take the barrel band off, but the lug that holds the screws that secures the band keep the forend from sliding forward enough to clear the receiver.

Is there some kind of trick I'm missing?

Thanks for any help.

The magazine tube needs to come out either before, or with, the forend wood.
