Now THIS is just making me drool..... Found a Winnie M70 Supergrade in .458 WM topped with a Leupold 3x9 for a price that was too good to pass up.. I have absolutely NO idea what I'm going to do with this beast, but it's a caliber I've never had before. Should be just the ticket for closeup prairie dogs.... LMAO...

Not too many elephants in western WI, but you never know when you're going to run into one... Just wanna be prepared, you know?

Redneck--is it new or old? Either way, big fun.

This is a PF action, not the CRF. I think this one was built about 1989 and shot very little. It's supposed to be in 98%+ condition. Should have it by mid-week next...

I know I'll never get to Africa but maybe my son will someday. Either that or I'll sell it in a short time, keeping the scope. I think I can end up with the Leupie for free.....

Take it from a Texas redneck. That caliber off the bench will bring tears to your eyes after the third or fourth shot. Had a Browning Safari unscoped when I was young and tough. I thought. Shot a three shot group at 100 with factory sights into about one and a half inch group. I thought the third shot had knocked my shoulder out of joint. I soon sold it. I wish you luck with yours.
I didn't mean to pee on your campfire, just wanted to share my experience with you.

Sounds like a good toy to me. Just a dumb question. Are you the Redneck from the good old days at shootertalk? reflex264

Everybody should own one , just to saythey did!
I owned a .375 custom safari for a bit a enjoyed shooting it, and my shootin' buddy owns a BRNO in 450 ACK imp., and let me tell you that is a pile of fun

C'mon Sweetsue,

its nothing but a thang!! I wonder if yours had poor stock geometry. My BSA is actually not unpleasant to shoot at all. I've shot with 300 Winnies that were more punishing to me.

LMAO, Sweetsue.... You can pee on my campfire anytime my dear...

I haven't fired this beast yet. Still working on repairing some dings on the stock and refinishing it. It's almost done, so the fun part is about to start... Thanks for the laugh, I needed that today.

To reflex264: Indeedy do, I am.. Still kinda miss that place...

To Badger: I have to agree that I dread shooting my .300WM than I do anything else, including my .375H&H. After about 10 shots, I put that Winnie away and drag out a rimfire.......... It has to be the powder. I use IMR 4350, mainly because I have a ton of it (not really a ton, but a lot anyway). I use Reloader 22 in my .257 STW and that's quite comfortable.

Thanks to all who've responded.. I'll try to provide an update when I get up the nerve to touch a couple off.

Hey Redneck. I figured there couldn't be more than one of you. Cant wait to hear how your .458 shoots. I've been wearing out my 45-70's and they are punishing enough. I've been looking at a .416 #1 to add to the toy box. Keep us posted. reflex264
ps-I still miss that place too. I've been hanging out at Marlin Talk till it shut down. Now I'm jumping board to board on 5 boards.

No elephants here in Wis. Dang, now I have to invent another reason for picking up a .458 myself.

Surely there's a zoo in Milwaukee---you never know when there might be a mass elephant jailbreak and without a stopping rifle where would you be? I've been using that excuse on my wife for years--just protecting your azaelas, dear.

I remember a single-panel joke in an old playboy once. It was by a cartoonist that had a real dark sense of humor. If I heard the name I'd recognize it. Anyway, this joke I remember showed an elderly couple standing on a sidewalk in a large city, directly in front of an alley where lays a dead elephant. The gentleman is blowing the smoke out of the barrel of this firearm he's carrying while the wife says, "Honestly, Harry, I'll never chide you for carrying around that elephant rifle again."

Now I remember,... the name of the cartoonist was Gahan Wilson..

Why do we remember things like this?? I know that had to be at least 30 years ago..

Reflex264, I'll be sure to give you a yell once I try this beast. I found a used set of RCBS dies for $30.00 that look perftectly fine. All I need now is brass and a few 4-500 grain bullets. Yesterday, a good customer came in complaining about the recoil he's getting on his M70 I rebarreled and chambered in .300WSM. This guy shoots a LOT of different rifles and is not afraid of recoil but this one (he says) is just beating the $hit out of him, so I installed a brake and am changing the factory pad to a Pachmayr. Kinda makes me wonder what I'm in for in this .458. Heheheee

458 Win...everyone ought to have one! They make fine running jack rabbit rifles and no one has ever had any problems with rogue elephants in my neighborhood

Redneck,
Flinches are hard to cure and expensive with the Big Bores. Much easier to shoot a 300gr or 350gr at 2400fps for awhile before graduating to the 500gr loads. Loaded with a 350gr Hornady at 2400fps the 458WM is very effective.
Cheers...

You make a good solid point. I haven't bought bullets yet but was searching a few sites for them yesterday. Nearly bought a box of Barnes 500 gr. solids before realizing the folly of such a move. I'm not going after elephants (yet). Will probably go with 350-400 gr sizes. I'm wondering if any of you have used the Hornady interlock 350 gr bullets in one of these calibers? Seems like the perfect balance between size and performance on game less than rhino/cape buff/elephant size..

I just picked up some Rem. bullets at a gun show in Wausau for my 45-70. 50 each of .458 in 300 and 405 gr. Bought them from Wis. Cartridge and paid $6.50 for 50 bullets. If you need bullets, they usually do the gun show circuit. They also sell on Auction Arms under the name WCC. About the cheapest place to get bullets.

Redneck, I load the Hornady 350gr to 2470fps in a Zastava 458WM. For a big bullet they shoot flat enough in that a little light under the horizontal cross-hair will get solid hits at 200m. I've only shot the odd big roo with them and they are decisive. Another hunter I know uses them for our Sambar deer (elk sized) and is very happy with their performance. The Rem 405gr and 300gr (for the 45/70) are cheap and if the flat nosed projectile feeds in your rifle then great practice/plinking loads can be made. I've got both a 458WM and 458Lott and feel that the 458WM is much more versatile all things considered.
Cheers...

Con, from your lingo, I'm guessing you're from AU. Lovely country from the pix I've seen. Wish I could find the bux to visit sometime. Have a comely lass I converse with from time to time in NSW and I always find it so interesting when I hear what's going on down under.....

I think the 350 gr selection will do well for now. If I ever fall into a pot of money and get to Africa for something that bites back, I'll happily load a few 500 gr solids. The 45-70 bullets will obviously fit the case but the flat noses detract a bit from performance.

I see you're a new member. Welcome to the campfire and thanks for the advice..

I have that cartoon packed away somewhere, I like to bust a gut the first time I saw it. Showed it to the wife when she asked me why I carried a .45ACP.

Hey, I remember that cartoon too! It was a well dressed elderly chap with a double barreled rifle on a city street. I beleive the wife said "I never chide you about carrying that elephant gun again." or something similar to that.

I can hardly believe the fact that others here have read and remember that cartoon. Yeah, it was a double rifle....... Seems to me this Gahan Wilson had a really dark sense of humor, similar to Gary Larson's "Far Side".

I've finally got brass and bullets coming for this rifle. Should be here today or Monday. Now if the weather would just ease up a little. Supposed to be rain/snow mix here for two days.. Typical March weather in WI...

Cast your own and you can get away from those flat points. I've got a 500gr. round nose mold and a 535gr. Postell. Mainly shoot the 535gr., it's a semi-pointed bullet that shoots real well in my rifle. Some of the cast bullet companies offer them I see, you could try a 50 count and see how you like them. Would be a whole lot cheaper shooting than those Barnes solids. My ole Sharps has never had a jacketed bullet ran through it, often wondered about trying those 500gr. Barnes though. My leads free though. Sure want to hear how your new rifle shoots.
