For you that hunt with crossbows: How long do you leave the bow cocked ? Do you pull and cock / load as soon as you get in the stand / blind ? Or do you wait till game is within shotting distance to cock & load ?

Before I get in the stand, on the ground, then put the bolt on later. miles
Look out for number 1, don't step in number 2.

+1 Leave it cocked for several hours. Take the bolt out before getting down from the stand and carry it back to camp where I can fire a bolt into a target and recover it. You can cock them in most tree stands but it is not easy so do it before climbing. JMHO YMMV TM
Some mornings, it just does not feel worth it to chew through the straps!~

I don't shoot the bolt to unload, I just put a foot in the stirup, pull back on the string a little and pull the trigger. It ain't as bad as it sounds. miles

I do the same but with the pulleys attached. Just make sure you don't still have the bolt in there...could make for a sore foot

I use one because of bad shoulders/back. While I could do it the way you describe, it is easier to just shoot it and it counts as practice, since I shoot a deer target at 40 yards with it. :-) TM

I cock it and load it as soon as I step in the woods. Unload to pull it up the tree, and then uncock it at the truck.
