If needed .... remove the Wheaties box-top from the front scope mount?

I want to thank you guys for all your ideas. I ended up putting med rings back on then shimming under front(closest to obj bell, to get my scope to clear) of base and that got me to zero @ 25 yds without using any of my adjustments.Man stuff like that drives my crazy whithout the info it would have been a nightmare Thanks again......

hilltopper I take it the rings were the problem? Are they matched incorrectly or did they have some other defect? The fact you were able to use different, shorter rings, shimmed the wrong way for the earlier problem to correct things it looks like the high rings had serious bad problems???
Glad you got it fixed! art

Rick and Paul.............
OPPPPPPPPPPPSSSSSSSSSSSSSS...... you're BOTH right!!! My tongue got in front of my "eye-tooth" and I couldn't "SEE" what I was saying!!!
The shims should be used on the FRONT mounts, NOT the rear mounts.
It's smart to hang around old guys 'cause they know lotsa stuff...

rickf, Well, I was curious about the 1" for 1 thou rule of thumb that you posted about. Yep, today I cut a pop can and measured it at .004. Already knowing that the 270 was zeroed @ 100, I installed the .004 shim under the front weaver base. The results with 3 shots were not quit 4" low, but near enough to be called a good rule of thumb, 1" for every .001 of shim. Thanks for sharing, could accidentally save someone some valuable time instead of experimenting trying to get a scope back into an elevation adjustment. Although proper bases for the gun to begin with should eliminate any need for shimming.

You guys are really anal about rings! Haven't you jumped a couple steps?
First- relieve any excessive (or all) forend pressure. i.e. check that your tightened reciever screws aren't doing kinky things to your barrel! When I "freefloated" the barrel of my Ruger .338, Point of Impact dropped 14 inches. Excessive forend pressure! Got better groups, too.
Second - check that your receiver is bedded flat, with no fore/aft torque. Glas bed or rebed the rifle as necessary.
Third- check that you have the proper rings- the scope should be sitting flat in both rings, no matter which you tighten down first. But do tighten down evenly when final mounting.
Forth - what Art (Sitka Deer) said.
Fifth- go to shimming, or the asymetrical rings as needed, but not before.

The last time I had that problem it turned out that I was using the same rear mount for both the front and the rear, and that was wrong. The rear mount needed to be higher, but the print on the package was so small, I didn't notice the need for two different sizes. Could that be the issue?
