This year I have killed
2 with Mathews bow
2 with 25-06 Rem
2 with 22 hornet
1 with 50 cal. Encore

So I guess the 3 best for me this year so far is
Mathews
25-06 Rem
22 hornet. grin

280 Rem if I needed more distance or needed to destroy more meat.
50 cal muzzleloader for dinosaurs and other larger than 280 game, or to get an extra 2 weeks of gun season here.

I honestly think that perfection in a general purpose Whitetail cartridge lies somewhere in the neighborhood of the following:
1. .260 Remington
2. 7mm/08 Remington
3. .308 Winchester

I love the .25 caliber cartridges for deer as well, but if I were saying that deer from 60 pound does to 300+ pound monster bucks were a possibility, at ranges to 400 yards, any one of those three would work like magic.

That said, if I didn't handload, and I figured on shooting only one centerfire big game rifle for the rest of my days, I think I might lean toward the .270.

You realize, though, we are talking about minutia here. <grin>
