great hunting story. a nice respectable mule deer like that is a dream i have not achieved yet. as to your query i would probably use my '06 pre 64 featherweight with a 3x9 leupold in conetrol mounts. I have just acquired another pre64 fwt in 270 and plan to use a vx-III 3.5x10x40 in conetrol mounts. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that it shoots as well as my old '06. I'm attaching a pic of my old '06 fwt with this years hill country buck. congrats again on a great mule deer!

Beautiful buck and awesome story. I love open country hunting too, and hope to do more of it in the future.

Your input is requested. Obviously, a lot of different hunting-rifle setups would work.

I would use my .308. Though it's not shown that way in the picture, it currently has a Leupold FX III 6x42 with the Long Range Duplex. With my current deer load and the crosshairs zeroed at 100 yards, the first dot is 225 yards and the second is 330. 2nd dot...

Great story. Great photos. Great rifle, and a great buck! Wow!!!

Congratulations!

My chosen mule deer rifle is a .25-06 Rem 700 CDL, but although I think it's nice, it doesn't hold a candle to that Winchester of yours!

Great read, I would take the shot with a 150 gr Bullet out of a 7mm Remington Magnum I been shooting the last couple of years. Its a Blaser and it likes 150 gr Fusions so that is what I would do. I have to admit that those M-70 Classics FWT's are some of the nicest looking production rifles that anyone could go and buy. Some may need a little TLC but then again what rifle off the rack dose not in some matter.

A 7 Rem Mag with 140 Nosler BT's. I have used that in 2 rifles, a Ruger 77 (8 lbs. all up)and a Win 70 LT Sptr (8.5 lbs. all up), with a Leupold Vari III 2.5-8 on several Western hunts in the type of terrain you were in; well, flatter than that terrain. Some 280 Remingtons reach the 3125 fps my 7 Rem Mags chronographed. I have a Rem Mountain 280 Remington but it's still wandering.

The camera? Great photos.

Wellll,

I cound take a shot like that with a M70 Fwt in 280 with a 2.5-8 Loopy VXIII on top.

Love that sage flat Muley country. Brings back memories of trips to W Dakota Muley and Antelope hunting. I don't know how many times I've ran the binos over country like that, then put the spotte to work and started counting deer laying in that crap.

I'd use my M70 FWT Classic SS in .30/06, 57 gr. IMR 4350 and a 165 gr. Nosler Ballistic tip, just because I've shot a few deer over 400 yds with it, lots at 150-250 yds, and it shoots even better than your .280 does. It's my favorite rifle, it's that one on the wall that will never be up for trade or sale consideration. Beautiful wood, beautiful stock design, finish, and fit. I really can't ask for anything more from a rifle.

Great, where can I find another keyboard? I think my drool may have ruined this one...

One helluva story. Thanks for sharing.

I like your rifle set up, with the Talley lightweight rings and the 2.5X8 fits it well.
