Fellas...In the strange event I get a lottery selection for the moose draw in NH, is my 99EG .300 enough for a NH moose? You have to figure they will run 500-1000 pounds of stupidity! I know I am going to get hammered by some saying a .22LR is enough "if I do my part", and I plan on doing my part, but...I see folks taking these animals with howitzers which seems ridiculous to me. I just don't want to have to invest in another rifle of a caliber I would use specifically for this hunt,(and that is to say if I won a lottery selection), and then put it away. I was looking at a Marlin .444 (sorry men!) as the shots are close and usually in the brush, but if my .300 is more than sufficient, I'll save my change!

I plan on starting to "roll my own" this winter too. I am sure the wise men in this forum could pass a recipe that would get'er done! Man! How sweet to be able to post a picture of the 'ole 99EG, (with iron sights!) resting on top of BullWinkle next fall! Yeah baby!

Hey Jack, I'm a round-nose bullet fan and for a "hefty" load in the .300 I like a round-nose 180 grain bullet seated over 40.0 grains of #4064. (You might try a grain or two under that at first, just to see what your rifle thinks of it.) With that load and a good hit, you'll find that the .300 Savage was "made for moose."

I have never hunted mooses but, I had "rolled some" for an elk hunt which I would not hesitate to use on Bullwinkle.
A friend gave me a partial box of Nosler 165 Partitions and I worked up to 40.5 grains of Reloader 12 under them for 2535 fps with accuracy of 1 1/2" at 100 out of my R. Reloader 12 has been discontinued but, I've heard good things of Rx 15 which I'll try whenever I run out of 12.

I've hunted with my 300 Savage many a time for moose.

You gotta figure it's the same thing as a 308 Win, there is a very small difference in the two and a 300 will bring a moose down just as well as a 308. It really doesn't matter what caliber you use to a degree, I've got buddies that use there 270 Win on them and haven't lost a moose yet. Mind you I wouldn't go any lighter than that. A well placed shot is the main thing to consider anyways.

A 165gr Nosler Partition is what I'd go with.

Which brings to mind and artical by Larry Koller. Seems he went to Canada to hunt the big harry things and carried,IIRC, a .30'60 plus a 99 in .250-3000 to hunt for deer. Shortly after beeching the canoe to make camp, his guide started calling with his birchbark horn and a big bull came running up to about 80 yards. Larry was unpacking and his '06 was under some duffle so he grabbed the .250, loaded, ploped down, levered in a round, centered the red bead on the bull's chest, and fired. The bull reared up, Larry levered another 100 grain and put it beside the first, dropping the bull which slide into the lake. He said they had to butcher it in the water and that was the last moose he ever shot near deep water.

.300 it is! Like I said, some will say a 22LR will do it, but not for me! I want to use the savage if I win the lottery! JC

I was the "helper" on a 300 Savage moose kill. 1 Federal 180 grain factory bullet, fired from a Remington 81, through the lungs killed that ME moose quite dead. The trick with moose isn't killing them, it is keeping them from killing you when you're in the process of getting your dead moose out of the woods.

Thats why i have a Franklin skidder!! keeps the rif-raf out!! up here in the national forest no motorized vehicles! my buddy pulls out moose with his work horses, technically hes not supposed to charge for it!! so he can only charge for bring the horses there ,than back to his barn! Don

I'm with calhoun for bullet selection. maybe even a 150gr. if you use a larger bullet than a 150 or 165 you'll loose case capacity and you'll give up bullet energy. besides if you get a crack at one across a big chopping. you'll be happy with extra range.

Wish I had the pics here of the bull and the cow we got this year and I had to work through season so I didn't even get a shot at either of them.

That sucks, next one you get, you need to take the pic with your 99 in it, I need a Moose pic for the web site. You have a better chance at one than I do, ultimate cool would be using that 38-55 on it. Les
